Conscious Discipline
Conscious Discipline is a comprehensive social and emotional intelligence classroom management program that empowers both teachers and students. It is a program based in current brain research/child development and developmentally appropriate practices with the goal to provide systematic change in schools from a traditional compliance model of discipline to a relationship-based community model. While we at Wiley have implemented certain elements of the Conscious Discipline program, we are extremely excited to be participating in school-wide professional development sessions tailored specifically to our school needs beginning in August. PTO has graciously offered to help fund our efforts.
Equity
Diversity and equity are key components of Wake County Public Schools strategic plan. The vision is for all of our students to be prepared to reach their full potential and lead productive lives in a complex and changing world. Along with our school system, we are committed to working to eliminate racial or socioeconomic inequities. Therefore, we began the school year with a staff visit to the RACE exhibit at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. This exhibition looked at race through the lens of science, history, and personal experiences to promote a better understanding of human variation while offering an unprecedented look at race and racism in the United States. In an effort to sustain our equity work, we devoted time at each monthly staff meeting to continued professional development on the topic of equity including article analysis, self-selected book studies, and a viewing of the documentary Resilience. Resilience highlights how communities working together can build resilience in kids to overcome the impact of adverse childhood experiences. With our continued efforts we hope to eliminate racial or socioeconomic inequities by eliminating achievement gaps and disparities in student learning.
