Share Your Christmas
November 10 - December 5
Dear BIS Faculty and Staff,
As the front-line contact with families and students, there are always questions during the holidays from people wanting to help others. We also get the questions from those needing assistance. For most people on either side they don't know where to start. Here is some information you can use at home, work, or church.
Polk County Christian Social Ministries (PCCSM) serves as the clearing house for Christmas in Polk County to help avoid duplication of assistance and connect families who need help with groups wishing to help. Help is based on financial need and PCCSM works in coordination with OACAC and Salvation Army to qualify families. Last year 527 families (1827 people) who live in Polk county received kindness from our community through the Share Your Christmas program. This year they are expecting to reach 2000 people.
This is where to start if you want to help a family. You can adopt a Share Your Christmas family or let them know of a family you are helping. This avoids duplicating assistance for some families, while others may go without.
Also-there are always families who do not qualify, do not apply by deadline or a last-minute need arises. Please check with OACAC for such families that could be adopted. OACAC also screens for energy assistance and you can donate to help offset those expense for families at the holidays and throughout the winter.
