COVID - Close Contact Test to Stay in School
VPS will start an optional test-to-stay program for students on Feb. 14. The program, developed and supported by public health officials, may eliminate an at-home quarantine for students who are not fully vaccinated and who are close contacts of someone who tests positive for COVID-19. Through regular testing, students who are close contacts will be able to continue attending school and participating in school-sponsored extracurricular activities.
Students who are fully vaccinated do not need to quarantine.
VPS is seeing improved attendance rates of students and staff, which may indicate a decline in cases. The test-to-stay program also will help our students stay in school. Test-to-stay was piloted with staff beginning Jan. 19.
More details about the program:
Who is eligible
Students who are not vaccinated or have not completed a primary vaccine series.
Parent permission is required.
Free COVID tests are available for families
Free at home COVID tests are available for families. Please sign up at www.covidtests.gov to receive your free test. This can be very useful to have on hand.
VPS is offering optional COVID-19 testing to help reduce the spread of the virus and reduce quarantine time frames when possible.
- Testing for current students is offered on the south side of the Jim Parsley Center at 4100 Plomondon St. Access the site via Plomondon Street. Hours: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday when school is in session. Testing will be provided on a drop-in basis.
- We are still working toward offering testing at every school. Start dates are contingent on staffing. More information is forthcoming.
Molecular PCR tests will be available for students and staff who are displaying symptoms or have been quarantined for at least five days as the result of being a close contact of someone who tested positive.
A parent or guardian must sign a consent form before a student may be tested. A student or staff member who has been quarantined must remain in quarantine until a negative test result is reported.
Tests will be processed in 24 to 48 hours after they are shipped from a school.
Mask Optional at Jason Lee
Masks and face coverings: Masks/face coverings are optional in school buildings and on buses. People may always continue wearing masks or face coverings if they would like to do so. We will respect individual choices regarding masks.
Masks/face coverings may be required in some situations such as after isolation due to a positive COVID-19 test or as the result of an outbreak.
Masks will be required in school health rooms as these are considered health care settings.
Parents, did you know that we issued, "Jason Lee Panther" masks to all of our students? Here is Ms. Vickery modeling hers!
COVID-19 Safety
One of the problems most often confronting parents of school-age children occurs when a child complains of not feeling well on a school day. The following is not intended as medical advice, but is merely designed as a guideline to be followed until your health care provider can be contacted.
Children should usually be kept at home if any of the following conditions are present (keep in mind the absence of fever does not always indicate the child is well enough to attend school)
- Fever (100.4 or higher) or chills
- Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
- Muscle or body aches
- New loss of smell or taste
- Cough (new, changed, worsening)
- Congestion/runny nose
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Sore throat
