Principal's Corner:
Last night, we held a Meet and Greet session for incoming Class of 2024 families and students. I wanted to share out with you all the presentation and link to a screencast, so you can also be familiar with what families heard and were informed about. The idea was to provide an opportunity to meet their new homeroom teacher, who they will be with for all 4 years at MHS. With that, it was an opportunity to hear from teachers/departments about offerings, as well as to take a school tour. This is one of many opportunities to help provide a solid transition for our incoming students, and to support them along the way toward success socially, emotionally and academically here at Marshall High School.
Last year, we invited 8th grade students and their 8th grade advisers over to the high school in early May to actually join in their homeroom with their peers, spanning grades 9-12 and enjoy a school tour and other activities to welcome them and begin making them feel comfortable. I would like to offer that again as part of another step in the transition process.
In August, Ms. Fresen (School Social Worker) and Mrs. Perzentka (English teacher) bring freshmen on campus for a more in-depth freshmen orientation, as in August, things start to get real!
These are just some of the ways we begin to partner and begin building relationships with our families and kids at the high school, as it is a significant transition from 8th grade to 9th grade.
I welcome your feedback as we continue to grow in what we do and expand our offerings to have a positive impact on our learning community.
What's Happening Academically and Around MHS?
Each Cardinal Connection you will begin to see more a break down from various departments, courses, and also around the building. We want to keep you abreast so we can build a stronger partnership through communication and sharing.
These are the kinds of things you may read about:
- What project(s) are underway in your courses/department or area?
- What are the big learning activities happening that you want families to keep abreast of?
- What is something else you'd want families to know in general (not individually based) to help engage them more?
Family & Consumer Science:
Students are doing their Western Hemisphere cultural Presentations and cooking!
English:
Civil Rights project presentations are happening along with reading the novel To Kill a Mockingbird
Students will be teaching the class about various events during the Civil Rights movement as a prelude to our reading Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.
Tech Ed:
We are planning for a capstone project of outdoor construction teaming metals and woods.
Parents should be looking at their student's work within the google classroom to stay abreast of the success or struggles their students are facing.....Their students should be posting evidence of their work.
World Languages:
Students in Spanish 2 soon will have a project where they are presenting new school rules that they come up with. In Spanish 3, students are working on finishing their children's books using the past tenses in Spanish that they have been learning. Students in Spanish 4 will soon begin a project where they plan a trip to a national park in a Spanish speaking country.
Spanish 5 is working on a unit where they are focused on what the future will bring us.
Library Media;
We have a letter put together for parents in regards to damaged Chromebooks. Letting them know when there is a fee applied to their child's IC account. Don't want them caught off guard.
Math:
Currently working on a grade book system for all students.
Parents/guardians can be checking student's progress and grade in IC and encourage them to keep on the right track.
Social Studies:
Social Problems--We are just beginning our new unit of study on terrorism in Social Problems.Students will begin to explore foreign terrorist organizations and then acts of domestic terrorism within the United States. There are two main goals for the unit that include defining what constitutes a terrorist act, common tactics and the goals and objectives of FTO's and domestic terrorists. Students will also decide whether or not events in our recent history were defined as an act of terrorism or a mass shooting/hate crime.
I am encouraging my students to watch the news...so that they are informed and can participate in class discussions. I have provided them with a few options that summarize top stories.
World History: We are currently doing our Age of Explorations simulation, where student experience what trade, travel, and exploration in the 1500-1600's was like by having them plan, execute, and face the perils of voyages of this time.
Science: Principles of Engineering
Principles of Engineering
Structural Engineering Project - Tower Building
Students use wooden craft sticks and super glue in an attempt to build a structure with maximum efficiency (strength-to-weight ratio) within given specifications. This is an application of the proficiency students previously developed in analyzing structures to determine which members are in tension and which are in compression.
Science 9
In Science 9, students are exploring the mechanisms of, concepts behind, and connections between gravity, seasons, and moon phases. Although many adults are confused about these topics, our MHS graduates should not be!
Science teachers at MHS assess your children based mostly on the skills they develop (what they can do) and less on content (what they know). We highly value questioning, investigating, interpreting data, constructing explanations, and supporting claims with evidence. Prompting your children to engage in these practices at home would help to reinforce their skills.
Please visit the MHS Website under Parent/Student Resources and go toward the bottom to click on to a course syllabus to learn more about the class, expectations and how to communicate with teachers.
Please let me know if you are needing assistance in contacting teachers. I am happy to help.

Brunch of Music
Saturday, February 22, the Marshall Music Boosters are hosting their annual Brunch of Music and Fine Arts Showcase. From 9:30 - 11:00 am, enjoy performances provided by the MHS band and choir students as they prepare for the Solo & Ensemble competition the following weekend. In addition, enjoy artwork displays by MHS art students.
In addition to the performances and art displays, join the Marshall Music Boosters for complimentary muffins, doughnuts, bagels, fruit and refreshments. This is a no-cost event, but donations to the Marshall Music Boosters are appreciated.
All activities will take place in the Marshall High School Commons. Invite your family and friends; this event is open to the public. Hope to see you there!
Solo/Ensemble
Marshall Middle School and High School band and choir students will be attending Solo and Ensemble Festival at Cambridge High School on Saturday, February 29th. Students have been preparing music since before Winter Break, and will be performing solos, duets, small group songs, and large group songs for judges who will critique their performance and give them a rating. Students choose music off of a list distributed state-wide, and they can choose music from 3 different classes, based on the difficulty of the piece. Students who are performing music in the hardest class (Class A) have a chance to move on to the State Festival if they have an exemplary rating at the Cambridge Festival. Performances range from Musical Theatre to Show Choir to Classical to Jazz. Students who perform a Musical Theatre solo are also required to perform a Classical Solo.
Students will perform from 8AM-4PM on that day, and a bus will be available to take participating students to and from the event. The schedule will be announced soon and will be e-mailed out to all participating students.
Come celebrate our learners and our MHS Fine Arts program for Leap Year!

Attention Classes of 2021 & 2022!
Youth Apprenticeship is a state certification program that allows 11th and 12th grade students the chance to earn school credit, work with a mentor in a chosen career pathway, have paid employment, and walk away with an industry-recognized certification. This unique program allows students, through a paid work experience, to earn 2 elective credits for each 450 hours of completed work in their chosen pathway. Students may work a maximum of 960 hours over their junior and senior years and earn 4 credits total.
Youth Apprenticeship also provides off-campus opportunities for high school credit in areas MHS does not offer plus college credit classes that are specific to your interested career pathway. These are 100% funded through the program, with HS equivalent credits earned. Apprenticeship programs exist in many career pathways.
You may already be employed and we can usually work with a current employer to be in the program if it falls within one of our approved career pathways. You may not have a job or any leads, and that is OK too. I can assist you in locating a training / work site.
Interested?
REQUIRED: Parent/student information sessions will be held in February and March. The first option is February 25 in Fitchburg; the second is March 2 at Monona Grove High School. (This has been rescheduled from Feb. 18th.) All interested candidates are required to attend one of the sessions offered. A flyer attached to the email provides more information. Attendance at the meeting is recorded and shared with me.
Email me (jgardenier@marshallschools.org) or schedule a meeting with me to discuss your options.
Be sure to mention your interest in the YA program during your class registration so that appropriate course work and study halls (potential release times to use for your YA class) can be put in place.
A completed application packet must be submitted to Mrs. Gardenier by March 30. Though applications are accepted at other times during the year, this is the best way to assure that you can get a job early and complete your required hours. Applications will be sent to you when you complete #2 above.
All accepted applicants will be invited to Flex sessions this spring. There are also several training sessions available to applicants related to the job search. Students who have contacted me will be invited to the Dane County Job Fair field trip on March 25. Students interested in construction careers are invited to attend an information day sponsored by the trades on March 18.
On a final note, if you have any potential interest, please apply by the deadline. You are NOT committed to the program and can withdraw your application at any point prior to signing a training agreement contract with an employer.
