Miss Roberts * Stoy School * February 3rd and 10th
Exciting News!
On Monday morning, February 3rd, 2R will be growing by one. We are welcoming a new friend, Amaya. Everyone is very excited to meet and help her get acclimated to her new school. Please help us welcome her and her family to Stoy School.
On Sunday morning, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow; giving us all hope for an early spring. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
Reading Workshop
The next two weeks are going to be busy in 2R. Although it is new month, which means a new Gooney Bird Greene book. We are going to have fun reading shorter picture books that use idioms. Idioms are figurative phrases that describe something other what the words actually mean. The idiom, "Butterflies in your stomach" does not mean you have actual butterflies in your stomach. It means that you feel nervous. Below are the covers of some of the books we are going to share.
We will also begin Unit 3 with Lesson 12. We will focus on the question: “How do you find important story characters?” First, we’ll read "Violet’s Music", a realistic fiction story about a girl who loves making music with her friends. We will also read "Wolfgang Mozart, Child Superstar", a biography about the real life of this famous composer and musician.
Phonics: Vowel Digraphs ai, ay
Grammar: Kinds of sentences
Vocubulary Skill: Figurative Language - Idioms
Vocabulary: shake, smooth, hours, alone, real, nursery, whenever
During Lesson 13, we will read about schools in other parts of the world and will explore the question, “Why do authors write different kinds of texts?” In the informational text, "Schools Around the World", we will learn about the ways in which schools in other parts of the world are the same or different. We will also read a selection of poems about school in School Poems.
Phonics: vowel digraphs - ee, ea
Grammar: Quotation Marks
Vocabulary Stratgey: Using a dicitonary
Vocabulary: culture, community, languages, transportation, subjects, lesson, special, wear
Writing Workshop
The students have a fun Writing Workshop project planned this week. They will transform their Valentine boxes into a display piece about themselves. Using familiar graphic and text features; heading, photo, caption, text, list, illustration and labels, the students will use each side of the box to inform a reader about themselves. It will make a LOVE-ly keepsake of their time in second grade.
Our writing focus will then turn to informational writing; specifically, procedural How-To stories. They will write and develop different sections of their book with specific details and much needed transitional words. This is always a fun unit for students to showcase their talents. You may begin to help your child chose a topic such as how to:
- change the litter box
- brush your teeth
- make a bed
Math
Over the next two weeks the students will work on complete Unit 7. The students will begin to explain how to plan the steps to solve many of the problems presented in this unit. They are expected to read the entire question, look at what information is given and determine what information they still need. Then, finally construct a math problem in order to answer the question. This process takes time, but is very attainable. An example the from the students' text book in is the picture box.
Unit 7 Metric Measurement of Length
Lesson 1 - Measuring in Meters
- Use a meter stick to estimate and measure length
- Vocabulary: meter stick * meter (m) * width * length * unit * height
- Compare lengths
- Find the difference in lengths of objects
- Vocabulary * taller * tallest * shorter * shortest * longer * longest
Lesson 3 - Measuring in Centimeters - 2 day lesson
- Use a centimeter ruler to measure length
- Draw a line of given length
- Vocabulary * centimeter (cm)
- Use a centimeter ruler to measure and compare lengths of objects
- Find the difference in centimeters in lengths of objects
Lesson 5 - Real World Problems: Metric Length - 2 day lesson
- Solve one-step and two-step problems involving length
- Draw models to solve real-world problems
- Develop thinking skills; deduction and sequencing
- Developing strategies; guess and check
Just before President's weekend , we will begin Unit 10, Mental Math and Estimation. The students will learn the meaning of sum and difference. They will also be introduced to mental addition and subtraction using the basic add or subtract ones, tens or hundreds strategy. These strategies will be taught using the concept on number bonds introduced and used in First Grade. The students will also use a number line as a visual representation to illustrate the rounding concept. The students will learn to round to the nearest 10 to decide if their answers in addition and subtraction are reasonable. Some of these strategies are new to the second graders, and many adults. As a result, we will take our time and work in small groups to help everyone better understand the steps needed. It is very important that the students are secure locating place value; ones, tens, and hundreds and know the pairs, compliments, or bonds of 10;
10+0=10, 9+1=10, 8+2=10, 7+3=10, 6+4=10, 5+5=10. Below are some strategies the students will be introduced to in upcoming weeks.
Add tens then subtract the extra ones strategy
- The first step was for the students to focus on the single digit and understand that +8 is the same as 10-2
- The second step was for the students to add 10 to double digit numbers then subtract 2
- For example: 86 + 7 = _____________
- The bond for 7 is 7 + 3= 10 so +7 is the same as +10 - 3
- Add 86+10= 96 and 96-3 = 93
*This strategy is used with adding a 3-digit number to a single digit number
Add the ones strategy
- The first step is for the students to separate the ones from the hundreds and tens
- 354 + 5 = __________
- For example 354 becomes 350 and 4
- Then add the ones, 5 + 4 = 9
- and 350 + 9 + 359
Add tens to a 3-digit number
- Identify the number in the tens in each number and group them out
- 238 + 50 = ____________
- 208 + 30
- Then add the two double digit numbers; 50 + 30 = 80
- And add 208 + 80 = 288
Science/Social Studies
We will begin Science in an unconventional way. The students will listen to various versions of The Three Little Pigs and reacquaint themselves with the three pigs' problem. Then...the fun begins! Students will work in pairs and have to design and build a house that can withstand a blow from the "Big Bad Wolf." The students will be supplied with a plethora of supplies consisting of various properties. With those supplies in mind, they will be asked to design their house and create a plan to build a model. Once the houses are built, we will challenge each house to go against the wolf's "blow-dryer". Good luck to all of our builders.
During the week of February 10th, we will begin Unit 3 in Social Studies, "Looking at the Earth." We will start off by reading Cynthia Rylant's Tulip Sees America. It is a story about a young man and his dog, Tulip. They travel throughout the United States and discover a variety of land forms and bodies of water. Throughout the unit, the students will be introduced to, and learn about, many of the landforms found across the United States. They will identify and locate hills, plains, mountains, valleys, islands and peninsulas. In addition, as a class, we will learn the characteristics of each landform and where they are found in our country, e.g. The Plains states are from Texas to Montana. We will then move onto three of the major bodies of water found within the United States; rivers, lakes and gulfs. The students will read about each and complete word web illustrating, labeling and defining each.
