Edgar Allan Poe's Early life
Edgar was born on January 19, 1809. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents died before he was three years old. John and Frances Allan raised him as a foster child in Richmond, Virginia.
Edgar Allan Poe's Education
John Allan sent Poe to the University of Virginia. After less than one year of school, he was forced to leave because John refused to pay Edgar's gambling debts. In 1827, he enlisted in the U.S army.
Edgar Allan Poe's Poem Writing
Also in 1827, he wrote his first poems called "Tamerlane" and "Other Poems". In 1829 he published Al Aaraaf, "Tamerlane", and "Minor Poems". Edgar then started to sell short stories to magazines. Then in 1835 he became the editor of the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond. Over the next ten years Edgar would edit a number of literary journals such as the Burton's Gentleman's Magazine, Graham's Magazine, and the Broadway Journal. Edgar's best know poems are The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, and The Raven.
Edgar Allan Poe's Death
On October 3, 1849 Edgar was found in a state of semi-consciousness. He died on October 7, 1849. He died of "Acute congestion of the brain." He lived to be 40 years old.
