MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I hope this newsletter finds you well. With winter break behind us, we are looking forward to seeing our students' growth during our most rigorous months of the school year. We recognize at Sato that your students' success is a team effort. It takes time and energy to support children at home with homework and life skills. If there is anything we can do to support your efforts, please do not hesitate to contact us.
As you know, the Beaverton School District takes the safety of our students very seriously. Not only does Sato have the latest safety features, the Beaverton School District also provides district-wide opportunities to practice procedures for various emergencies. This week, we will participate in a district-wide lock-out drill. Parents in the building will participate in the drill along with all staff and students. A lock-out means the danger is outside. A lock-down warning means the danger is inside. Because of the large number of windows at Sato, we ask that students stay in their classrooms with the blinds down to outside windows during both drills. Teachers will continue to teach during a lock-out. During a lock-down, everyone hides behind a locked door. If you are in the building during one of these drills, you will want to follow the lead of the staff and get to a room as soon as possible.
As the weather turns bitter cold, we want to make sure all students are warm when going out to recess. If your family is needing support in providing your child with warm clothes, please contact our counselor, Laurie White or me. The Clothes Closet is sponsored by Beaverton School District and passes are available to get student clothing.
Wishing each of you a great beginning to a new year!!!
All my best,
Principal Hagseth

Buses on Snow Routes:
For Sato, this means NO BUSES.
To clarify: If a bus picks your student up in the morning and then BSD declares snow routes, there will be NO BUSES to take your child home. What this means for parents is they will have to provide transportation to and from school, or have their children absent for the day.
If there is an early dismissal without buses (which is a likely situation with early dismissal at Sato), you will need to come to the school to pick your child up. There are 526 students at Sato. This means approximately 450 families coming to the building to pick up students. You will need to come into the building to sign your student out with a staff member.
So, what we are asking is to PLEASE add any and all of your neighbors to Synergy who may pick up your child in an emergency. If they are not on the list, they CANNOT pick up your child. You can make these changes thru Online Enrollment Verification (ParentVue).
You can also email marlene_staugler@beaverton.k12.or.us or cristina_guajardo@beaverton.k12.or.us with additional emergency contacts or bring any changes in writing to the school office. Please do so ASAP, as our phone lines will be jammed during an early dismissal.

Smarter Balance Testing Update
Last spring, students in grades 3 – 8 and 11 in the Beaverton School District and throughout Oregon took the state tests (Smarter Balanced) in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
In addition to content standards, these assessments are designed to measure critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. The test results provide you, our schools, our district and the state with information about how well we are preparing our students for their next steps including college and career readiness.
Our students will take these tests once between February and June 2018.
House Bill 2655 permits parents and adult students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting a form to the school the student attends. The school shall provide any student who is exempted from a state test with supervised study time while other students are testing.
