LET'S CELEBRATE
- Mrs. Gerson's first grade made Layered Cookies in a Jar for the Charlotte Food Shelf.
- Last week Mrs. Brady and Bouteiller's First Graders made hand tied fleece blankets for animals at an animal shelter in Rhode Island where Mrs. Bouteiller 's sister works. They Skyped with her at the shelter this week to see the results of their kindness.
- It was Opening Day of the basketball season Monday, and all of the CCS teams were in action. Both the girls and boys A-teams put up good efforts against a pair of very strong teams from Williston. The girls B-team overcame a slow start to mount a furious comeback before falling to an excellent Williston squad, while the boys B-team employed solid defense to defeat their rivals from across the District 14-10. Good luck to the all of our teams as they take on Camels Hump Thursday, Browns River on Monday, and close out the semester on Wednesday versus local rival Hinesburg.
- For the first 15 weeks of school, we have added 1,616 lbs of food scraps, filling 1 bin and just starting another. We are on track to divert ~ 2 tons of food from landfill (as we did last year). By processing these cafeteria post-consumer food scraps onsite, we are maintaining ~$2,400.00 savings in reduced hauling fees, that we negotiated by changing our Casella contract last year.
- This month has been busy in the mentor loft! Mentor pairs are building house interiors with sculpey, playing chess and other games, painting Christmas figurines, carving woodblock prints, decorating cookies, building birdhouses, playing basketball, soccer and ping pong, cooking exotic dishes, fixing things, using the schools 3D printer and much more! If you’d like to know more about the Connecting Youth Mentoring Program, please contact Wendy Bratt at wbratt@cssu.org or 425-6642.

HOW TO "GREEN" UP YOUR HOLIDAY CLASSROOM PARTIES
Holiday celebrations are a wonderful way to mark the season, color and flavors of winter.
Did you know...the week before winter holiday is one of the largest trash production times in our school year? Help CCS Waste Less!!
For classroom parties....
1. Consider baked goods, trail mix, fruit slices, roasted seeds, popcorn, mulled cider etc. as favorable to individually wrapped treats. These are both healthier snacks for our students and less waste producing.
2. Use reusable plates/cups/napkins, OR feel free to take from the compostable dishware supply in the teacher's staff room.
COLD WEATHER DRESS REMINDER
WATERSHED AND TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM!
Pictured is engineer Jessica Louisos, from Milone and MacBroom Engineering, showing 6th graders plans (designed by last year's 6th graders) for mitigating storm water run-off on the school grounds. This sustainability project is part of a greater effort by "Ahead of the Storm"that is targeting 14 storm water resilience demonstration sites in the area. Students at CCS are working to increase water quality in McCabe's Brook which flows north to the LaPlatte tributary. In a joint effort, Shelburne students are focusing on the water quality of the LaPlatte, which flows into Shelburne Bay.
