Beto
Columbian War Stories
Family
-Before Beto was born his mother had a son named Fredy and when his mother went to work she would have a friend “Gloria” look after Fredy but one day her friend decided not to give Fredy back.
- She hadn’t seen Fredy until about three years ago but he was all messed up.
- He was doing drugs and involved in gangs; he had a daughter but he didn’t treat her like a good father should.
- After losing Fredy she brought in “German” to live in the house but all German did behind his mother's back was beat Beto and his sister.
- German eventually went to jail for stealing from us and the neighbors But when he got back he was even worse to Beto and his sister.
Enviorment/neighborhood
-Beto lived in a neighborhood filled with gangs and street violence, some of which Fredy and German were involved in.
- The whole town that Beto lived in was filled with violence and gangs.
- Many teenagers resort to the gang life because of violence at home and they use the gangs to get away from it but what they find with the gangs is much worse than what they experience at home.
Events that influenced him
-Beto went to a church to escape the violence at home and then joined a sing and dance group through the church and heard about a leadership program and went to it only to find out the were talking about what he was experiencing.
-At home Beto and his sister were beat by German and his older brother would always do drugs and involved in gangs so Beto wanted to stop all that so him, his sister and everyone else could live a better life.
Threatened
- Beto was threatened every day by German because if the did something German didn’t like German would threaten him saying things like “ I’ll knock your teeth down your throat.” or even escalating to “ I’ll stab you with my knife.”
Peace
-Beto was tired of seeing his older brother coming home all paranoid about being killed by gangs when he was so high he couldn’t walk straight so he wanted to take down the war and the gangs with peace.

ed by the gangs
Impressed
- I was impressed by him not joining a gang including the fact that both Fredy and German were involved gangs and the gangs life is a path chosen by many kids his age.
Question
-If I could ask Beto a question I would ask him I would ask him how tempting it was to join a gang with them all around him?
