ESC REGION 10 SOCIAL STUDIES UPDATE
February 2020
Hello From Your R10 Social Studies K-12 Consultant
Welcome Back!
If my counting is correct, you are now only about three or four weeks away from Spring Break! You can do this!
I have always felt that the stretch from MLK Jr. Day to Spring Break is one of the toughest of the school year. Here's to hoping that you are keeping warm and staying sane this time of year.
Please feel free to share any new resources or gems that you find or know of.
We have some exciting professional development opportunities coming soon. As always, I am always available to help you with resources and would be happy to come out and work with you to support any needs you have. Please follow us on Twitter and sign up for the Social Studies Listserv.
Look for us on Twitter - @Region10SS

AN EYE ON LITERACY
The Power of Her Pen by Lesa Cline-Ransome & John Parra Ethel Payne always had an ear for stories. Seeking truth, justice, and equality, Ethel followed stories from her school newspaper in Chicago to Japan during World War II. It even led her to the White House briefing room, where she broke barriers as the only black female journalist. Ethel wasn’t afraid to ask the tough questions of presidents, elected officials, or anyone else in charge, earning her the title, “First Lady of the Black Press.” | Never Caught by Erica Armstrong Dunbar & Kathleen Van Cleve In this incredible narrative, Erica Armstrong Dunbar reveals a fascinating and heartbreaking behind-the-scenes look at the Washingtons when they were the First Family—and an in-depth look at their slave, Ona Judge, who dared to escape from one of the nation’s Founding Fathers. | She Came to Slay by Erica Armstrong Dunbar In the bestselling tradition of The Notorious RBG comes a lively, informative, and illustrated tribute to one of the most exceptional women in American history—Harriet Tubman—a heroine whose fearlessness and activism still resonates today. |
