Windows 1

  • Released on November 20th, 1985
  • Was the first GUI based operating system released by Microsoft
  • It was built on top of MS-DOS it could only tile its windows they did not overlap
  • Different versions of Windows 1 were released
  • Windows 1.02 was released in May 1986. It was an international release
  • Windows 1.03 was released in August of 1986. It was an international release that provide enhancements and included drivers for European keyboards.
  • Windows 1.04 was released in April 1987. This version added support to IBM PS/2 computers. It did not include support for the PS/2 mice or VGA graphics modes

Windows 2

  • Windows 2.0 was released in December 1987
  • It featured many improvements to users interface and memory management
  • Windows 2.0 introduced better and more sophisticated keyboard shortcuts.
  • Windows 2.1 was released in two versions
  • Windows/286 ran both on Intel 8086 and Intel 80286 processors
  • Windows/386 used the virtual mode of 8086 of the Intel processor 8086 to multitask DOS programs.
  • Windows version 2.03 changed the OS from tiled windows to overlapping windows

Windows 3

  • Was released on May 22, 1990
  • It was Microsoft first successful version of Windows
  • It included the game Solitaire and Minesweeper
  • It had a more improved user interface and had numerous technical improvements.
  • Programs like program manager, file manager, and print manager were introduced in Windows 3
  • Windows NT was released on July 27,1993.
  • Windows NT was platform that supported high end engineering and scientific programs.

Windows 95

  • Windows 95 was released on August 24th, 1995
  • Microsoft sold 7 million copies in the first five weeks
  • It is available in 12 languages
  • Windows 95 introduced for the first time the Start Menu, task bar, minimize and maximize, and close buttons on each window
  • Windows 95 had built in internet support, dial up networking, and new plug and play capabilities to make it to install and uninstall drivers.
  • The 32 bit version offered enhanced multimedia capabilities
  • Better and more powerful features for mobile computing and networking were introduced

Windows 98

  • Was released on June 25,1998
  • It was the first version designed for consumers
  • Consumers on Windows 98 could find information more easily on the internet.
  • Consumers had the ability to open and close programs more efficiently and quickly
  • It also supported the reading of DVD discs and USB devices
  • It also introduced the first appearance of Quick Launch bar
  • Quick Launch Bar allowed you to run programs without having to browse the start menu or look for them on your desktop

Windows XP

  • Was released on October 25,2001
  • It had redesigned look
  • It was built around the usability and a unified Help and Support service center
  • It is available in 25 languages.
  • It was fast and stable
  • Navigating the start menu, task bar, and Control panel were more complex
  • The OS was more aware of computer viruses
  • Windows XP home edition offered a simplified design
  • It offered enhancements like Network Setup Wizard, Windows Media Player, Windows Movie maker, and digital photo capabilities.
  • Windows XP professional brought the solid foundation of Windows 2000 for desktops
  • It had enhanced improvements in security and performance
  • It included feature for business and home computing
  • It included remote desktop support, and encrypting file system, and system restore and advanced networking features.
  • Several editions were released
  • Windows XP 64 bit edition was the first one designed for 64 bit processore with large amounts of memory, engineering and scientifcic programs.
  • Windows XP media center edition was made for home to enjoy watching DVDs, listen to music, and browse the internet

Windows Vista

  • On January 3rd, 2007 Windows Vista was released worldwide
  • Design on Windows Vista was enhanced greatly
  • It included an updated graphical user interface
  • Features like the task bar and borders around the windows got a new look
  • It also introduced a new search window known as Windows Search
  • Microsoft also resigned networking, audio, print and display systems, and new multimedia tools which including Windows DVD maker
  • Microsoft for Windows Vista intended to improve its security as previous OS were vulnerable to malware and security breaches
  • User account control helped prevented potential harmful software
  • It received criticism for its high system requirements in order to operate

Windows 7

  • Was released on October 22nd, 2009
  • It introduced new feature to make the users experience more enjoyable
  • It introduced things like snap, peek, and shake which improved the users functionality
  • It had a redesigned task bar
  • They introduced libraries for document, pictures, videos, and etc
  • They also introduced Home group which allowed for easy sharing of files and printer among computer on a home network
  • It was available in six different editions (starter, Home basic Home premium professional, enterprise, ultimate
  • The starter edition was designed for netbooks
  • Home basic was sold in only emerging markets
  • Home premium was a consumer edition
  • Ultimate had every feature enabled for Windows
  • Professional was used created for the workplace
  • Enterprise was sold only through volume licenses. It was designed for large organizations

Windows 8

  • Was released on October 26th, 2012
  • It recreated the operating system from the user experience and interface
  • Windows 8 featured a new redesigned start screen
  • It featured tiles that connected to files, apps, and websites
  • Apps were now front and center for the user
  • Their was also a new way to access apps. The windows store was built right into the start screen
  • It also came with a built in version of Microsoft office optimized for touchscreens

Windows 10

  • Was released to the public on July 29, 2015
  • For the first time Windows allowed you to upgrade to the new OS for free
  • This OS delivered an upgraded Windows interface
  • Windows 10 also introduced the first digital personal assistant from Microsoft known as Cortana
  • Cortana learns from behaviors and preferences of the user to optimize their experince
  • Windows 10 also introduced their own web browser know as Microsoft edge
  • New security features are introduced in Windows 10
  • People could sign in with face recognition or with their fingerprint
