Thank you for the wonderful welcome so far. It was great meeting with each of you. It's an honor to serve you as principal and I look forward to working with each of you.
As I told many of you in our meeting, this business is all about relationships and engagement. Relationships between administration, teachers, students and parents must be fostered for our school to be the best learning environment for our students it can be. The more positive the relationship, the more engaged each of us will be in providing the best learning environment we can. Engagement can mean many things and can take various forms depending on the task.
To me, engagement means extreme focus on the task at hand. When you're in professional development, are you there to get better or are you just meeting a requirement? When I'm walking through your classroom, am I truly focused on how I can help you be a better teacher, or am I just fulfilling a quota of walk-throughs I have established for the week? Are students in class truly engaged, are are they just fulfilling the requirement set forth by the law?
These are decisions we make daily that impact our level of engagement. The more engaged we become in the task at hand, the more intense our level of improvement. Student engagement is an area where we can truly impact student learning and achievement. The question then becomes "What does that look like and how can we foster an environment which allows all students to be maximally engaged at all times?" These are just some of the questions we will be answering when we reconvene in the fall.
I am providing two links through this letter. One link is a needs assessment for our campus. The other link is compliance training each of us will need to complete for the '18-'19 school year. Yes, you've probably seen a lot of it before so much of it will be review. However, it is required and given the short amount of time we have when we get back, you will need to get this done prior to your return. This will provide you with more time in your classrooms and less time focused on compliance.
I'll be around all summer, so swing by and holler if you get the opportunity!
I hope you have a restful break!
Be intentional about engagement!
