Information for parents, caregivers, and families
YES, A FREE LUNCH!
This means any students in the Jackson Local School District, regardless of ability to pay, will receive a free breakfast and lunch. Students must order the normal lunch for that day. Any ala cart or "extra" items will incur a cost.
For example, if students choose to buy only milk (or extra milk), they will be charged fifty cents. However, if students order a full meal which includes milk, the meal is provided at no cost to the students.
USDA has announced this program may be canceled before December 31 if funding is depleted. Should the free breakfast and lunch program be canceled, parents will be notified. Because of the possibility of cancellation of the program, it is IMPORTANT parents still complete the free and reduced lunch applications for all eligible students for 2020-2021 school year. Enrollment for free and reduced lunch is available on the school district website at https://www.jackson.stark.k12.oh.us. Click District/ Food Service and PaySchoolsCentral.
Our MyMealOrders is available on the district website PaySchools Central to place orders for our eLearning 2.0 and Digital Academy students. Orders placed are available for pick-up from 10 AM-11:30 AM at the school building your students normally would attend. These meals include our daily breakfast and lunch the campus students receive. Meals can be ordered in advance for Option 2 and 3 students but orders must be placed by noon on Thursday of the previous week.
The menu calendar is available here.
REMAINING VIGILANT AND NIMBLE
As we have seen, several other Stark County school districts have multiple cases and we know there will be more in our buildings. As cold and flu seasons begin to pick up, it is important to remember the flexibility in our learning models. Students in both Option 1 (in-person learning) and Option 2: eLearning 2.0 (POLARIS) are able to transition between the two options seamlessly. Our learning management system (POLARIS) allows students in both options to remain in complete classroom curriculum alignment as it provides a mechanism for our teachers to store and deliver lessons, tests, and other interactive methods of classroom participation (such as discussion boards). As circumstances warrant or as parents and families feel comfortable, students in Option 1 may transition to Option 2 (or vice versa) and complete classroom instruction and assessments at home if they are not well enough to attend in-person instruction but are well enough to complete work at home.
This is a testament to the job our teachers are doing in populating our Learning Management System with curriculum, instruction, and assessments. It also is a testament to the job our cleaning personnel is doing throughout our buildings.
It is remarkable the work being done by Jackson Local faculty and staff to allow us all to be nimble and flexible in a time when it is most needed — and keep our options 1 and 2 students in sync with their curriculum.

JACKSON SCHOOL OF THE ARTS BRINGING 'WIZARD OF OZ' TO YOUR LIVING ROOM
And regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic — THE SHOW MUST GO ON!
Due to Ohio Department of Health restrictions, there will not be a live performance of "The Wizard of Oz" for the public. However, in an effort to bring the show to our community, the Jackson School of the Arts has established a way for those who want to see the show to do some from the comforts of their own home. By October 19, viewers will have the option to purchase a link to view a recording of the JSA version of "The Wizard of Oz." More information will be shared at a later date as the details of purchasing that link become available.
This year's show will differ from the traditional Wizard plot. Our JSA students are incorporating the current conundrum that exists in today’s education. In this fall's show, young Dorothy (portrayed by Emma Maier) is torn from the comforts of her home, where she is nurtured by her family, Auntie Em and Uncle Henry, to embark on an emotional journey of confusion, self-doubt, and finally self-realization. On her way to the land of Oz, she meets the empathetic Scarecrow, who embraces overt kindness and tradition, the Tin Man, a technological guru who has to be reminded that compassion and connections are the heart of all we do, and the Cowardly Lion, who just does not know which way to turn. Lion is so well-meaning but so confused. He tries to do the right thing, to learn from the new ways, but he is terrified by change and losing his grip on the affective benefits and comfort of the way things have always been done.
More than anything Dorothy just wants the Wizard of Oz to help her to return to the love and comfort of home and familiar traditions. However, on her journey she finds that her new friends, who have encouraged her to see the future in a new way, and to expand her horizons, have become her family. Maybe, just maybe, her future becomes a composite of tradition and the new way, and that realization, in tandem with the love of friends and family, truly is what makes home, home. No matter how she is impacted by change and circumstance, Dorothy learns there really is no place like home.
We hope you will find the time to watch this version of "The Wizard Oz" and look forward to sharing our the talents of our students with you.
