St. Catherine October Newsletter
Principal's Message
Wow! September was a busy month. We welcomed many new families to St. Catherine! Classroom time was spent learning new routines and establishing positive relationships. October promises to be just as busy with Thanksgiving at the beginning of the month, Halloween at the end of the month and various events and activities in between. (Please see the note about our expectations in regards to Halloween at St. Catherine School.)
We are excited to have our first Artist in Residence this month, Ken Lumbis. Ken will be working with students, teaching them about the art of pottery. Our final product will be a whole school installation inspired by the interconnections of a tree, where each child is a unique leaf in a beautiful thriving system.
As always, we at St. Catherine work diligently to ensure our school has a safe and caring environment. Our AMA Safety Patroller program will begin soon. We have safety patrollers patrolling one crosswalk before and after school each day. Please follow their direction and guidance. If students, or parents, do not follow their direction they are asked to report these cases to the administration to be addressed. They are volunteering their time to ensure your child gets across these very busy roads safely.
Professional development for teachers is very important. Our teachers at St. Catherine engage in a variety of professional development opportunities through the year. Most of these on our full-day PD days. However, at times through the year your child’s teacher may be out of the classroom to attend a workshop or to observe another teacher. During our Friday PD days, teachers are collaborating in small groups working towards a common goal. Teachers will be choosing a focus that will have an impact on student learning. Through our PD days, teachers will be researching, planning and implementing activities and assessments. Teachers will reflect on what worked and what they might change. We see this as an opportunity to collaborate and improve our teaching practice which will have a positive impact on student learning.
As always, we ask you to please encourage your child to read at home every evening. It is the best thing you can do for your child’s literacy development. We believe that your positive attitude towards reading, learning and school helps build that same positive attitude in your child.
Have a great month! I know it will be a busy one!
