10 Ways School Lunches Are Changing
So...What's For Lunch?
USDA Smart Snacks Guidelines
"Why are portions smaller this year?"
- Some ala carte portions were reduced in order to meet new USDA standards - especially vendor items.
- Pricing of reduced ala carte items went down in accordance with portion-size reduction.
- Some items appear smaller, but in reality, it's just the packaging. Even juice portions are still the same amount; brands changed, but both have the same number of ounces.
- All Type A meal portions are the same as last year.
"What is a Type A Meal? "
Type A meals are both nutritious and meet all food groups. They are designed to help keep students full throughout the school day, helping concentration and focus. A Type A meal includes:
- Entrée
- 3-4 sides, depending on grade level (sides are fruits and vegetables)
- Milk
"My child is coming home from school starving..."
Start by questioning whether your child is eating their full meal at lunchtime, just a few items, or perhaps selecting only from ala carte items.
"My child is starving after sports practice."
School lunches are not designed to last through an after-school practice where athletes are burning a lot of calories. Parents should consider sending healthy after-school snacks for their athletes to snack on before practice.
