Ways to Practice Reading at Home
Reading is important to success in school. Parents often ask what they can do to help their child become more interested in reading and how to encourage their growth in reading. Below you will find a list of things you can do to help your child improve their reading skills.
- Provide a good role model — read yourself and read often to your child.
- Provide varied reading material — some for reading enjoyment and some with information about hobbies and interests.
- Encourage activities that require reading — for example, cooking (reading a recipe), constructing a kite (reading directions), or identifying an interesting bird's nest or a shell collected at the beach (using a reference book).
- Establish a reading time, even if it is only ten minutes a day.
- Write notes to your school-age child; encourage written responses.
- Ask your child to bring a library book home to read to a younger sibling.
- Establish one evening a week for reading (instead of television viewing).
- Encourage your child in all reading efforts.

Comet Coin Update
Challenger Comets are working hard every day to follow our school wide expectations; be safe, respectful, responsible and resourceful. On February 7, we had our second school wide Comet Coin celebration by wearing pajamas to school. It was a blast! Students are now working towards their third Comet Coin celebration. The goal is to earn 3000 coins. We are currently at 525. In the classroom, students are also earning celebrations for meeting their classroom Comet Coin goal. Some of the celebrations that classes have done are; read ins with blanket forts, pajama day, stuffed animal day, class games and extra tech time. Ask your child about their class goal and what celebrations they have had this year.
