Please take a moment to read through these important announcements from McMillan Magnet Center.

The Mission of McMillan Magnet Center is to academically challenge students and to promote student ownership of learning in a safe, diverse, and respectful environment.

The Vision of McMillan Magnet Center is to:

· Collaborate with school, family, and community-based partners.

· Provide an innovative, project-based, cross-curricular school setting.

· Integrate components of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math through Project Lead the Way (PLTW).

Please look for a Monthly Newsletter from McMillan Magnet Center on the 1st Monday of each Month. Other weekly emails may be sent out when important events or information arises that is not included in the newsletter. If there are questions, please contact the school at 531-299-2440. Thank you.

Come Support Our Monarchs in November

National Junior Honor Society will start collecting food items for the Kroc Center food bank next week. Students may bring canned or boxed non-perishable items to school until November 21st. Food will be collected in students Pride Homerooms. The 6th, 7th and 8th grade pride who bring in the most items will earn a celebration to honor their empathy/generosity.

McMillan Quiz Bowl teams will take it on the road Saturday, November 9th to compete in the Bryan High/Middle School tournament. Quiz Bowl practices Tuesdays after school in room 173.

Phenomenal S.T.E.M. Girl at Omaha North High School, Thursday November 14th, 5:30-8:00. A hands-on workshop for all 6th & 7th grade female students interested in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering or Math. Spots are limited, register at

Poetry Slam Workshop is scheduled for Monday November 25th at UNO. Ms. Tendall our poetry coach is working with McMillan poets to get poems ready. There will be an all OPS Poetry Slam in the Spring. Interested students should see Ms. Tindall or Mr. Costanzo.

Book Basters will be starting up in November. Students who love to read should see Mr. Costanzo about times and dates of meetings. There are ten novels which are excellent for engaging young adult readers. We will meet regularly throughout 2nd and 3rd quarter to discuss the novels and connections which can be made to the present. The competition is 2nd semester in March.

Quiz Bowl

Over the weekend, McMillan's A team (Sofia Acosta, Ella Holtzclaw, Maxim Boulovi and Ricky Brock) took 3rd place in our home tournament! There were 31 teams in the competition, including 2 from Brownel Talbot, 3 from St. Margret Mary's and 2 from Cornerstone Christian. All the teams did great! I am very proud of these students! Please congratulate them when you see them in class or the hallways!

McMillan's Mathletes are off to a great start this year! Our students took first place in the North High competition, and third place in the OPS Middle School contest.

National Junior Honors Society

Pink Out was held Friday October 25th. NJHS Members sold fifty cent pink ribbons at lunch and were able to raise over $230.00. The money will be donated to Project Pink'd a local charity which assists persons diagnosed with breast cancer.

High School Selection Open House / SELECCIÓN DE PREPARATORIA 2020-2021

The Student Assignment Plan allows eighth grade students an opportunity to attend any OPS High School beginning with their 9th grade year, providing space is available. Students are guaranteed placement at their home attendance area high school if this school is selected in January.


Please note that students may be eligible to receive transportation to some, not all high schools. Students who change school placement after the selection process has been completed may not be eligible to receive transportation.

OPEN HOUSE: Before making your selection, we suggest attending the Open Houses held at the high schools. The schedule is:

Benson High 5120 Maple St. Jan. 21, 2020 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Bryan High 4700 Giles Road Jan. 09, 2020 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Burke High 12200 Burke Blvd. Jan. 14, 2020 6:00-8:00 p.m.

SCHOOL SELECTION: Every 8th grade student will receive a selection form from his/her middle school in early January 2020. Every student must return his/her selection form to their middle school by January 29, 2020. Students will register for high school classes at their current middle schools in March.

SELECCIÓN DE ESCUELA: A finales de enero del 2020, todo estudiante de 8avo grado recibirá un formulario de selección, en su secundaria. Cada estudiante deberá de regresar el formulario de selección a su escuela secundaria antes del 29 de enero del 2020. En marzo, los estudiantes se inscribirán a las clases de preparatoria en su actual escuela.
