Ms. Pedersen - Social Media Safety
Social Media Safety
This month I had the privilege of going into the fifth grade classrooms to discuss the importance of safety and privacy when joining social media. Some trending apps in the classroom were Snapchat, Tiktok, Instagram and Youtube. There are some steps you can take as a parent to enhance safety when your child is engaging with others online and some important things to know if your child comes across a “cyber-bully”.
1. Private, Private, Private! I emphasized this multiple times to your children but please
always make sure each account is set to private. With these settings, you are able to
review and accept your followers. This is comparable to the public option which would
mean anyone can follow, view and comment on your account.
2. Time Limits! They will be frustrated with me when I tell you this, but please set a time
limit for phone usage. Some parents are able to turn certain apps off around 9 pm which
helps promote better sleep patterns.
3. If you by chance encounter an online bully, each app will have a block and report option.
Simply block the account and report the comment made. If this continues, encourage
your child to always advocate for themselves and tell a trusted adult.
4. Never use their real name- always nicknames. This prevents strangers being able to find
out more personal information about your child such as their school or address.
