JSGS Unity Week Going
October is National Bullying Prevention Month
Keep It Going
EXPECT RESPECT
STOP/WALK/TALK
Our Character Ed Trait for October is Respect. During Unity Week, all students and staff will train on STOP/WALK/TALK, how to respond when someone shows Disrespect.
What is it?
Suppose Bill says or does something disrespectful or mean to Bob, Bob will give Bill the "STOP" hand sign from American Sign Language. Click this link to see how to say STOP in sign language http://www.handspeak.com/word/search/index.php?id=2079
What if it doesn't work?
If Bill continues to do or say something mean, Bob will walk away. If that doesn't stop Bill, Bob must tell school staff or another trusted adult. If Bob feels he is in danger from Bill or being cyber-bullied, he should tell an adult right away.

Why do it?
Students often do inappropriate or mean things just to get attention or to show off for other students. Research has shown that by removing this attention, most students will stop doing or saying mean things. Students who continue to show disrespect and say/do mean things, will be referred to school staff who can make sure the student receives the right interventions and/or consequences to stop hurting others.
What is Cyber-Bullying?
Cyber-bullying is using electronic communications to bully someone by posting or sending embarrassing, mean and/or threatening messages. Some students falsely believe that their identity is hidden when they are online and so they tend to write things they would never say in person.
