Staff Bulletin for the Week of September 19, 2016

5D Scripting and Coding Practice

In order to practice scripting and coding in the 5D PIVOT program, I will be popping into classrooms beginning this week to hone my skills. I cannot guarantee that I will be able to cover the entire building, but I will try. You might want to inform your students that they can expect me to bring my laptop into classrooms at random times throughout the year and record the exciting work they are doing in class. After the 15 minutes of observing, I will stick around to code (this is the biggest learning curve in the new process). If you have a particular lesson that you would like me to observe during the next two weeks of my practice, please let me know. I look forward to being where the action happens!

Student Success Team Meetings

The district has put on hold the scheduling of half days for Student Success Team meetings until we develop an established systematic model. In the meantime, we will use our Data Digs as times to brainstorm and evaluate supports and interventions for students. Please continue to document interventions that you use with struggling students, and we can arrange individual SST meetings during your planning periods on an as-needed basis.

One School, One Book

Please share your thoughts about choosing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for this year's One School, One Book reading in March. The Sweet Tooth has the props from last spring's production of Willie Wonka, and we may be able to arrange for the actor who played Willie to sing for our Sailors at our March is Reading Month Kick-off. Also, because of Gene Wilder's recent death, there might also be a lot of airing of the movie on TV during the next few months, which would help to get families excited about the book. Finally, our Daddy Daughter Dance theme is Candyland. Thank you, Michele Zohr, for sharing the idea of this title!

Belle River Student Council

Becky and Kellie C. are serving as advisors for the Belle River Elementary Student Council, which is now recruiting responsible, enthusiastic, and hard-working members for the 2016-2017 school year. We are accepting applications from third, fourth, and fifth grade students who are interested in becoming leaders in our school. The applications will be reviewed by teachers, and two students from each grade 3-5 class will be selected to serve on the Student Council.

Fifth grade Student Council members will have the opportunity to run for the office of President, Vice President, Secretary, or Public Relations Manager. Those students will campaign during the week of September 26th, and they will make a brief statement during a Student Council Rally assembly on Tuesday, September 27th. The students in grades 3-5 will vote for the officers on September 30th.

It will be exciting to foster leadership and groom our Student Council members to perform various jobs around the school! Thank you, Becky and Kellie, for taking charge of this wonderful program for our upper elementary students!

Other assemblies are in the process of being booked (including Science Alive).

ECSD Educational Foundation Grants

I encourage you to apply for an ECSD Educational Foundation grant. Please let me know if you need any help in developing ideas or describing your plan. The application is due by October 7, 2016 and will be awarded at our October 24th Board of Education meeting. Please run your idea by me before completing the application.
