What is depression?

Depression is a serious medical illness that affects about 17.5 million people in America alone. Sadness is just a temporary thing, but depression is always with you. Depression can make you change your lifestyle. You do not find things interesting and you find little pleasure in things.

Do you have depression? Do you know somebody with depression?

There are many symptoms and ways to know if you have depression, or to know if someone you know does.

- Changes in sleep patterns - Insomnia is a symptom of depression for some people, others choose not to sleep/sleep a lot to not have to deal with the sadness.

- Lost/gained appetite - Some people deal with depression by eating a lot or not eating at all.

- Inability to concentrate - With depression, you have a lot on your mind and it can be hard to concentrate on one thing.

- Energy loss - You do not have the energy to do normal everyday things with depression.

- Interest loss - Depression makes you lose interest in all activities that once would have pleasured you.
