SIM/KU Training Details: 2017-18

All classes will be offered for renewal or graduate credit. Registration is now available.

The SIM/KU Learning Strategies are evidenced-based and include proven teacher routines such as pretest/post-test data collection and review, direct instruction, teacher modeling of the strategy, and controlled/scaffolded practice for students. The strategies are designed for students to reach mastery and to use the tools and processes in all content areas in school and for living, learning, and working after high school.

Word Identification Strategy Training

The Word Identification Strategy provides 4th-12th grade students a functional and efficient way to successfully decode unknown multi-syllabic words in their reading material.


  • 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 19 at the PLAEA office in Pocahontas
  • Registration deadline: Oct. 5. If less than 10 people sign up, the training will be cancelled.

Paragraph Writing Strategy Training

The Paragraph Writing Strategy is for organizing ideas related to topic sentences, detail sentences, and clincher sentences. Student also learn how to use appropriate transitions, point of view, and verb tenses within their paragraphs. Students learn a set of steps for integrating these skills as they write several kinds of paragraphs.


  • 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Dec. 1 and Dec. 15 at the PLAEA office in Pocahontas.
  • Participants must attend both days. It is highly recommended that participants attend the Sentence Writing Strategy Training before attending this training.
  • Registration deadline: Nov. 16. If less than 10 people sign up, the training will be cancelled.
  • Cost which includes materials - $43

Fundamentals of Paraphrasing & Summarizing Paraphrasing Strategy Training

The Paraphrasing Strategy is designed to help 5th-12th grade students focus on the most important information when reading. It teaches students to identify main idea and details as well as rephrase the content in their own words.

Fundamentals of Theme Writing Strategy Training

The Theme Writing Strategy focuses on the fundamental skills associated with writing narrative themes, informational themes, and persuasive themes. Students will learn to write a theme paper composed of related paragraphs and transitions within the introduction, body, and conclusion. Participants are required to have attended Paragraph Writing training as Theme builds on the skills included in Paragraph.


  • 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 23, 2018 at the PLAEA office in Pocahontas.
  • Registration deadline: Feb. 9, 2018. If less than 10 people sign up, the training will be cancelled.
  • Participants must have had the Paragraph Writing Strategy Training in order to attend this training.
