Flores Class Chronicle - Week 2

Reagan Elementary School - 4th Grade

Week of August 31 - September 4, 2015

Welcome to 4th Grade!

We believe that one of the biggest indicators of a child's success in school is the communication flow between school and home. To that end, the 4th grade will be communicating what's happening around our neighborhood on a weekly basis. We'll highlight the current week's activities, what's coming up on the horizon, homework expectations, and any other additional information that you may find helpful as 4th grade parents. We often err on the side of over-informing to ensure you have all the information you need to help us partner together in making this a great year for your child. We know your time is valuable and your email boxes overflowing, but please take a moment to read our memo each week.

Weekly newsletters may also be found on our class website under the "Weekly Memos" tab. Questions and/or comments? Please let me know!

For the Love of Learning,

Jan Flores

Parent Email Addresses for PTA Room Rep

Our PTA room representatives will be coordinating a variety of activities this year that will provide camraderie for our students and will help support our school PTA. To help make these activities successful, they need to be able to get in touch with the parents of students in our class. Please contact your child's homeroom teacher by the end of the week (Friday, September 4th) to let us know if you DO NOT want us to release your email address to our PTA room representatives. If we do not hear from you by Friday, then we will assume you don't mind if we share your email addresses with the PTA room reps. Please note that the PTA room reps will keep your contact information private and will only contact you regarding matters related to our class and the PTA.

Bring a Book to School Every Day!

Please help to make sure your child is bringing books to school every day! It is important for reading class for students to have books they've chosen themselves that are interesting and at their reading level. We do have an extensive class library, however, it doesn't always have what your child is interested in reading.

Want to know what we're doing in math this year?

Check out the letter below if you are interested in finding out more about what we'll be doing in math class this year. Leander ISD uses an elementary math curriculum called Bridges in Mathematics.

Lunch Visitors

We LOVE having parents come and enjoy a lunch date with their child! However, due to the beginning of the year transition while we find our groove with our schedule, please give us a week to settle before joining your child for lunch. The campus will be open to lunch visitors beginning Monday, September 1st. (Please note that this date has been corrected due to misinformation in the previous weekly memo -- sorry for any confusion!)

Want to Keep in the Loop?

While I have a professional twitter account (@jfloresteacher), I am in the process of starting a fourth grade class twitter page. We will use the class account to tweet about our learning and any exciting events. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, as Twitter has a new policy which requires a cell phone (not associated with another account) to verify new accounts. Feel free to follow my professional account and I will let you know as soon as I get passed the red tape.

I also utilize a service called Remind throughout the course of the year in an attempt to make your life as a parent just a little bit easier. With Remind, I can send parents one way texts with time sensitive reminders or last minute schedule changes (for example, "Picture Day tomorrow!", or "Field Trip on Friday; please fill out permission slip if you haven't done so") that are beneficial for you to know. To subscribe to the service, text @floresrays to the number 81010. For more info regarding Remind, see the link below.

Starting this week, our weekly memos will be sent via email as well. If your email address changes, please let us know so we can keep our records current.

Bring Your Own Technology Permission Form

In an effort to prepare our students for success, we participate in the BYOT/BYOD (Bring Your Own Technology/Device) initiative. Students are encouraged to bring any internet enabled device to school with them at their parents' discretion. Please understand that this is not a requirement, and while we don't have enough devices for students to use individually, students that don't bring their own device will have access to our shared ones here in the classroom.

Students that wish to participate in the BYOT/BYOD initiative must sign a contract BEFORE bringing devices to school. Thank you to those parents who have already completed the form. If you would like another copy sent home with your student, please email me a request. jan.flores@leanderisd.org

Please check out this list of apps that we will be using throughout the school year. For students participating in BYOT, it is strongly encouraged to install these apps at home now so they are ready to be used in class this year.

Students will be viewing activities with sound on devices in the classroom throughout the school year. We are very limited on headphones for technology. It is very helpful if students keep a set of earbuds in their backpack or cubby so that they can use them at school.
