The Articles Of Confederation was America's first attempt of making a government. The Articles Of Confederation Gave all states equal power. The American Citizens hated these Articles for the States highly taxed them. The government was too weak and was not working out.
Weaknesses of the Articles Of Confederation
Government had no real power
A weakness the articles of confederation had was all the power was in the states, and with that power the states taxed the citizens highly. Americans couldn't pay the taxes and were thrown in jail.
No power to raise army
The government, Drowning in war debt, Had no power to raise an army. With no army, America couldn't stop any type of fights or rebellions like the Shay's Rebellion.
Laws required Two-Thirds of states to approve
To pass laws, 9 out of the 13 colonies would have to approve it for it to pass. The states could never agree on whether or not certain laws should pass so nothing really got passed.
Strengths of the Articles Of Confederation
Northwest Ordinance
The Northwest Ordinance was America's first organized territory. They used part of the land for education, setting up public schools. The rest of the land was sold.
Governed The American Revolution
During the american revolution, The Articles of Confederation were America's only type of government at the time.
Signed the Treaty Of Paris
Formally ended the war on September 3, 1783 that freed the colonies
Shay's Rebellion
Shay's Rebellion was a large organization started by Daniel Shay. Shay's Rebellion shut down courthouses all around the colonies for arresting those who could not pay their taxes. The government did not have an army to stop the rebellion or have the funds to create an army.
