The Hasty Howler
October- Parent Engagement Newsletter
From the Principal - Dr. Rosario-Regan
We are off to a great school year and have already started “ Raising the Bar.” It is starting to feel like autumn outside, and that means that our scholars and staff are in the top gear of learning and teaching.
As we continue to work in partnership with you, our parents, I would like to share with you some information about the benefits of reading with your scholar. There is no more important activity for preparing your scholar to succeed as a reader than reading aloud together. Fill your story times with a variety of books. I encourage you to be consistent, be patient and watch the magic grow. It is no secret that activities at home are an important reinforcement for what your scholar is learning in the classroom. Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world.
Although the life of a parent is often hectic, you should try and read with your scholar at least once a day at a regularly scheduled time. Enjoy making lasting memories with a good book.

Dear Hasty Families,
We are excited to welcome fall and to continue partnering with you to support student learning.
As the parent engagement facilitators, we would like to encourage you to become involved in your child's education at Hasty and at home. There are many ways that you can participate:
- attend parent engagement events which include PAD Night, Coffee with the Principal and ESOL Night.
- visit the Parent Resource Center and check out educational materials to take home and practice literacy and math skills.
- volunteer your time to support teachers and learn more aboout our school
This year, Hasty will dedicate two weeks to parent-teacher conferences. We believe that two-way communciation between parents and teachers/schools is a cornerstone of parent engagement and key to improving student achievement. Below you will find conferencing tips you can use during your meeting. We hope to see all of our Hasty parents during conference week!
Sincerely,
Luciana Shipp and Paige Tatum
Conference Week: Tips for Parents
Hasty Elementary will host parent-teachers conferences during the month of October. Research shows that students learn more, have higher grades, and have better school attendance when parents are involved in their child’s education. That’s why conferences are so important and we encourage all parents to attend.
Parents should be on the lookout for communication from their child's teacher in regards to scheduling the conference. In the meantime, below are some conference tips to make the most of your meeting.
Before the Conference
- Tell your child that you and the teacher are meeting in order to help him/her.
- Make a list of topics you want to talk about or questions you want to ask the teacher.
During the Conference
- Relax and be yourself.
- Ask the most important questions first.
- Ask for explanations of anything you don't understand
- Ask your child's teacher for ways that you can help your child at home.
- Thank the teacher.
After the conference
- Talk about the conference with your child.
- Talk about the positive points, and be direct about problems.
- Tell your child about any plans you and the teacher created.
- Visit the Parent Resource Center and checkout materials to help with learning at home.
- Keep in touch with the teacher during the school year.
