A Note From the Health

The Health Aide will be conducting Mandated Health Screenings this month starting SEPTEMBER 19 2022, the following are the requirements for all mandated screenings. If you choose to opt-out of the screening, you may do so as long as we have the requested documentation:

The requirements for VISION AND HEARING SCREENING apply each year for children enrolled in any licensed child care center, child care home, or school program at the ages or grades listed below:

4-year-old students in Pre-K, Kindergartners, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th graders.

Spinal Screening Requirements

State law says that schools must screen students for spinal problems in the following grades/at the following ages:

  • Girls at age 10 or 5th grade AND at age 12 or 7th grade

  • Boys at ages 13 or 14 or 8th grade

If you do not wish to have your child screened for religious reasons, you must submit an exemption to the school and proof of MD screening before September 19, 2022.

(Screening is usually done by visual inspection of the spine to look for asymmetry of the shoulders, shoulder blades, and hips. The screener will not touch your student)

Acanthosis Nigricans

Parents will be notified of the results of the screening only if professional follow-up is necessary. Usually, the recommendations from your health care provider consist of dietary changes and additional physical activity. This screening procedure does not replace your child’s need for regular health care and checkups.

According to Texas law, these screenings must be conducted unless an MD letter of screening has been provided in advance of the screening

Should you have any questions and/or concerns, please send an email to the health Aide at mordillano@harmonytx.org
