Naples HS Monthly Newsletter
NOVEMBER 2018
Message From the Principal
Dear Naples School Community,
The first quarter of the 2018-19 school year has been a blur! At the time of this writing, we have commenced with the first day of second quarter at Naples High School and First Quarter Progress Reports will be mailed to families at week’s end. Students have had the opportunity to participate in many landmark activities and school events: Grape Festival, Homecoming and Spirit Week, Fall Athletics and Sectionals, field trips, the Halloween Dance, and Parent Teacher Conferences (to name but a few).
At the HS, Parent Teacher conferences were held on 11/1 and on 11/2. It was wonderful to have so many parents and students in over these two days to meet with their children’s teachers. We are proud to share that we hosted a total of 152 conferences! Thank you all for the opportunity to work in partnership with you to best support Naples' students!
Given it is November, and a time of refection and gratitude, I want to take this opportunity to share just a few things of which we feel grateful for at the HS:
- We are thankful each day for our students, who arrive daily ready to learn. Our students are a tangible reminder of what is truly important and our purpose.
- We are thankful for the dynamic teachers, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, clerical staff, nurses, and support staff who demonstrate genuine care about Naples students and their achievement.
- We are also thankful for all of you. Thank you for entrusting us with your most precious possession and for being a partner in your child’s education. It is in partnership with you that we have the greatest potential to actualize the mission of public education.
Wishing you and your families a happy, healthy and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday! Enjoy spending time with family and friends!
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Warmly,
Mrs. Ashton

- Congratulations, Luke Dideon! Luke was asked by Theresa Figuerado - Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions at SUNY Binghamton to put together a portfolio of his drone business for submission at the college. Luke also sent the portfolio to his admissions contact at RIT. The documentary will showcase what teenagers are doing today as opposed to 20/30 years ago. Kudos, Luke!

REMINDER: Academic Eligibility Policy
A. Eligibility Status of Students
1. A student failing one or more subjects for one week will be placed on the Academic Warning List, and strongly advised to spend 9th period Tuesday through Friday working with the teacher who has placed him/her on the list. The student's parents/guardians will be notified of the academic situation by the school via a letter / email. This student will be restricted to assigned study-halls until he / she achieves a passing average.
2. A student failing one or more subjects for a second consecutive week or longer will be placed on the ineligible list. The student will remain ineligible for a minimum of one week. The student’s parents/guardians will be notified of the academic situation by the school via a letter / email.
3. A student may regain eligibility status by achieving a passing grade in all classes. NOTE: This is FOLLOWING the minimum of one week ineligibility!
B. Ineligibility restrictions:
1. Ineligible students and students who are on academic warning are restricted to study halls, and lose any building or senior privileges.
2. Ineligible students and students who are on academic warning may use the computer room or library for academic work only if they are issued a “task specific” pass by one of their classroom teachers.
3. Ineligible students are not permitted to participate in contests, performances, dances, extracurricular trips, club activities, class activities, and other non-curricular school activities.
4. Ineligible students will be permitted to practice for contests and performances as long as they provide the coach / advisor with a pass from the teacher (or one of the teachers if failing multiple subjects) showing that they stayed after to improve their grade. Failure to produce a pass will result in the student not being able to practice.
5. Ineligible students and students on academic warning may attend school events open to the public for the purpose of viewing these events.
From the Desk of Heather Clark
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Although the first quarter has already come to an end, we are constantly trying to find new opportunities for our students to be the best they can be! We have made the decision to compliment our successful 7th and 8th grade Lunch Bunches program led by Mrs. Nicholson with a R.I.S.E. Coaches program. As you are aware, R.I.S.E. stands for Respect, Integrity, Safety, and Excellence, which is our building-wide positive behavioral intervention system.
Beginning November 13th, R.I.S.E. Coaches will start meeting during lunches with myself in the Main Office Conference Room to be trained. Trainings are designed to build resiliency skills by teaching students how to handle typical life stressors and difficult, but common, social situations in a positive manner. Resiliency skills are the skills that students use every day to overcome minor problems in their environment. The goal of the R.I.S.E. Coaches program is for the coaches to learn skills to disseminate throughout the building during their daily peer interactions.
Our school is committed to ensuring that all students get through their school years not only with strong academic skills but also with the skills necessary to foster resiliency and prevent social, emotional, and behavioral problems that can impact success in various areas of a student’s life. If you have any questions about this program or wish to review the program materials, please contact me hclark@naplescsd.org.
Sincerely,
Heather Kay Clark

Naples Talent Show
On Thursday November 25th The Naples Chorus put on the first Naples Staff and Community Talent Show. The evening, which was hosted by Mrs. Ashton and Stefan Radak, featured the talents of some of the adults of Naples in a variety of musical and comedic acts.
Principle Ashton responded to the nights success of the night by saying "Simply, wow! An incredible evening of talent, community and asset building...The evening FAR EXCEEDED any expectation / idea one may have had going into the (1st Annual???) Naples Talent Show." After all was said and done, the Chorus was able to raise over $1350 for their trip to New York City in the Spring. But perhaps more important than number of audience members and ticket sales, the night was a great reminder that Naples is rich with talent- both students and adults alike! We look forward to continuing to showcase all that this community has to offer in years to come, and thank everyone who made the evening a success. We hope to see YOU up there next year!

Poe's Tell-Tale Heart Breakout EDU
Poe's Tell-Tale Heart Breakout EDU:
On Halloween, the library and English teachers hosted another Breakout EDU. The English Department coordinated efforts this October with many students reading a Poe title in class.
To celebrate Poe's works, students were able to sign up to participate in a Breakout EDU about Poe's Tell-Tale Heart. Eighteen students attended the event and were broken into four different teams. While enjoying snacks, teams worked on solving a "cold-case" about the old man's death from the Tell-Tale Heart. Students worked hard to open their boxes by getting codes from the file's clues. In the end, one team was able to get all, but one lock off their Breakout EDU box, to win the competition. Winners received $5 gift cards to Subway. Breakout EDUs have been a very popular ninth period activity in the library. The library looks forward to doing another one in the near future.

Model UN Club at Naples High School
Naples Model UN club participated in the 40th annual Model United Nations Conference at Canisius College in Buffalo on November 1st. The group of 12 Naples students (Elizabeth Maczynski , Dylan Rohr, Adam Quarterman, Stefan Radak, Luke Didion, Jacob LaPrairie, Oweb Kennedy, Benjamin Fowler, Katelyn Lincoln, Gianna Vest, Kaya DeTurk, and Stella Frazer) participated in a number of different simulation ranging from a Historical Security Council to a Modern Human Rights Council. Students researched about the topics in their designated council specific with the the view points of the country that they were selected to represent. This not only allows students to realize the perspective and differences of other countries, the conference also allowed the opportunity for Naples students to interact with more than 400 other students from the greater Buffalo community. Ben Fowler and Luke Didion, who were representing the country of Belgium, were awarded the most creativity resolution in the Human Rights council for his proposal about how to handle refuses coming to Europe. Each participating students had a unique experience that allowed them to grow as an individual and as a student as the day program concluded.

Naples Food Drive
The National Honor Society will be running a Food Drive in both the elementary and high school buildings, the week of November 13th-November 16th. Items collected will be donated to the Naples Open Cupboard, the Monday before Thanksgiving. This is a key time of year for folks to donate items to the Open Cupboard. In the past, the elementary school has far surpassed the high school in the number of items donated. We would like to see a better showing by high school students this year. As an incentive to increase the number of donations at the high school level, there will be a raffle prize drawing each day. Students will receive a raffle ticket for each item they donate. The raffle tickets will be entered in a daily drawing for a gift card to places, like Neapolitan and Subway. Students will have four chances to win! If you would like to make a donation, contact Mrs. Betrus in the high school library (cbetrus@naplescsd.org).
