SPRING Gifted Eligibility Process
Evaluating 4th & 5th grade students for gifted services
Tuesday, January 2, 2024
Parent/Guardian Referral Window is Open 1/2-1/26
Between Tuesday, January 2 and Friday, January 26, parents/guardians may request that their child be evaluated for gifted services by submitting a completed and signed referral form (permission to evaluate) to Mrs. Rombach, EMES gifted resource teacher. Mrs. Rombach will begin pulling students for testing and/or portfolio lessons soon thereafter. Before the end of the school year, parents can expect to be notified via email about the county's gifted eligibility decision.
IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION
Keep in mind that LCPS students may be evaluated for gifted services once annually. Therefore, 4th or 5th grade students who participated in the fall 2023 evaluation cycle are not eligible for re-evaluation until fall 2024. Similarly, participants in the spring 2024 eligibility cycle will be eligible for consideration again in spring 2025. LCPS delivers weekly gifted services to students in grades 4-8 who, through a multi-tiered identification process, are identified as advanced learners needing enrichment and/or extension services.

The mission of the gifted identification process is to identify and provide services to advanced learners - the top performers at a grade level - who require enrichment/extension in order to be challenged intellectually and academically. Since giftedness is dynamic rather than static, the LCPS Gifted Education department provides universal screening in 3rd grade with annual re-evaluations offered through 8th grade (with a parent/guardian referral). Gifted services end after 8th grade since Honors, Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and the Academies of Loudoun provide countless high-school opportunities for advanced learners.
The Three Primary Considerations for LCPS Gifted Eligibility
1. MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test scores - Math and Reading
2. CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) scores - Verbal, Nonverbal, and Quantitative
3. Student Portfolios - a collection of student responses to a series of critical and creative thinking challenges
