It's a Second Grade Thing

October 2015

What we will be learning in October

In ELA, during the month of October, we will begin our illustration unit. Students will notice how illustrators use their pictures to help tell a story. They will then copy some of these crafts while writing their own story. In addition, we will begin focusing on comprehension strategies. We will look at why a writer is writing (Author's Purpose), making connections and inferences with stories, and visualizing what is happening in the story. We will continue to have weekly spelling quizzes. Below is a list of the pattern for the week and the word of the week.

Sept 28th: Short o; capable

October 5th: short u; carve

October 12th: Long a, silent e; consider

October 19th: Long i, silent e; core

October 26th: Long o, silent e; damp

In Math, students will work on using number relationships when counting coins and telling time. They will also solve one step problems with 2 digit numbers. Students will need to continue to work on fluency. This six weeks we will focus on doubling numbers, and doubling plus or minus one. In Science, students will investigate force, motion, and energy. Students will also continue to learn how to be good citizens, history and time, and technology in Social Studies.

Save the Date: Special Person's Day

The 50th day of school is November 2nd. We will celebrate by having a 50's day fun day. We encourage students to dress up in 1950's gear They will also learn about life in the 1950's and will do many activities around the number 50. After lunch (more details will come stating exact times) parents and grandparents are invited to join in the fun. We will have activities and photo opportunities. In addition, we will have a good old fashioned sock hop to end the day. Please plan to come join us!
