Hello from Hoover!
October 29, 2021
Hello Hoover Families!
It's hard to believe that we turn the calendar to November on Monday! We have a busy stretch of time ahead until Thanksgiving holiday break so on behalf of the teachers and staff, I thank you for your ongoing care and support of your children and our school.
The days and nights are cooling down. Please encourage your children to dress for cooler temperatures. It might be time to trade shorts and tank tops for long pants and sweatshirts. Dressing in layers and having a coat, gloves, and a warm hat at school will be helpful to adjust to the varying temperatures inside and outside the building.
If you have not yet signed up for Parent Teacher Conferences, please see the section below and use the links to reserve a conference time. If you have questions or need help with the scheduling program, please call the school office (319) 688-1110.
Love and light to all,
Mrs. Ceynar

Parent Teacher Conferences
This fall, all Iowa City Community School District elementary schools will hold parent teacher conferences virtually on the following dates.
November 11, 2021: 2:10pm-7:10pm
November 17, 2021: 7:40am-7:10pm
We want all families to participate in parent-teacher conferences! Interpretation services are available. Please contact your child's elementary school office if you need a language or American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter.
You may sign up for a conference with your child’s classroom teacher through the Conference weblink below:
You will enter your child’s first and last name and use their birthdate as a password (MM-DD-YYYY). Once logged in, the first page the parent will see is a listing of the classes and teachers the student is enrolled with. The parent can schedule an appointment with each teacher by clicking the button on the right of the line.
Once you have signed up for a conference, you will receive an email confirmation along with a link to the zoom meeting.
If you would like the option of receiving information regarding your child's progress in specials classes, (art, library, music, and/or physical education) you have two choices.
One choice is to sign up for a virtual conference with any of the specials teachers. Please contact your child’s elementary school office by November 4, to have your child’s specials teacher(s) added to your conference schedule which will allow you to schedule a time with them in advance.
The second option is to email your child’s specials teacher to request a written report. This report will be emailed directly to you.

HEALTH AND SAFETY IN SCHOOL
Mask Requirement to Continue
Dear Families and Staff,
On October 8, 2021, a preliminary injunction was granted regarding the State of Iowa’s mask requirement ban. This preliminary injunction follows the temporary restraining order that was issued on September 13, 2021, and provides school districts in Iowa the ability to require face masks in schools. Based on this decision, the Iowa City Community School District will continue to require face masks for all students, staff, and visitors in our buildings and on our campuses.
This decision is based largely on the CDC’s strong recommendation that face masks be worn in schools, regardless of a person's vaccination status. This requirement also aligns with the advice of our local public health experts. We appreciate your support and collaboration in keeping our school community safe.
Sincerely,
Matt Degner

Voting Day November 2, 2021
On November 2, 2021, the Iowa City Community School District will ask voters to consider the renewal of the Iowa Secure and Advanced Vision for Education Levy (SAVE) and the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL). The no new money renewal of these levies allows the District to complete the promise of FMP 1.0 and to embark on Facilities Master Plan (FMP) 2.0 with no tax increase. This extension of SAVE and PPEL also provides funding for District-wide lifecycle projects that would otherwise pull vital teaching and learning dollars from the District’s general fund. This progress would come with no increase to the current tax rate.
Our District will hold two community information sessions on the extension of PPEL and SAVE. Superintendent Matt Degner will share details about the November 2, 2021 vote and answer questions from participants. The information sessions will be held virtually on the following dates:
- Tuesday, October 5 from 5-6:00 pm
(Zoom link: https://iowacityschools-org.zoom.us/j/92800531354) - Wednesday, October 20 from 5-6:00 pm
(Zoom link: https://iowacityschools-org.zoom.us/j/92800531354)
You can learn more about our District’s plan at www.IowaCitySchools.org/FMP2.0. We appreciate your engagement in this process and please vote on November 2, 2021. #ICCSDtogether
Classroom Celebrations in ICCSD
Dear Families and Staff,
Last year, COVID-19 forced us to rethink many of our practices within the school day including our classroom celebrations, such as fall, winter, and spring parties. The decision to do away with elementary classroom celebrations last year provided time for us to reflect on the overall classroom party concept. Our work around equity is at the forefront of everything we do, and in recent years we have looked at participation in our classroom parties through an equity lens. For cultural or religious reasons, many of our families opt for their students not to participate in one form or another. For those that do participate, access for all students is not the same (i.e. lack of costumes, food, cards, etc.). It is for those reasons that we will continue with the practice of no classroom parties moving forward.
We understand that celebrations are an important part of our students’ school experience. Each of our schools will continue to find inclusive ways to have classroom and school-wide celebrations, that don’t fall around holidays, throughout the school year. While these may look different, they will continue to be part of our system of support. We strive to make all students and families feel welcome and included in all aspects of our school day and our school community.
Sincerely,
Matt Degner
