The Good News
May 20 - St. John XXIII Catholic School
Leadership Message
As we celebrate the journeys of our students, staff, and families of St. John XXIII, we also are preparing for some important and exciting changes ahead. Students will be moving to new grades and new classrooms, and some are joining our staff at Our Lady of the Angels in the fall. Our grade fours are spreading their wings and flying off to St John Paul II - a school near and dear to my heart. We even have some staff members embracing new challenges in new buildings. While change is exciting, it can also bring some trepidation and worry. This is natural and we help one another through this with patience, care, and faith. One of the most important things we can teach our children is how to work through the anticipated changes with faith and trust. God has designed each of us in His image and has wonderful plans for our journeys. Through change and challenges we learn and discover the gifts and strengths we have. At St. John, we are dedicated and working diligently to prepare our students for the transitions ahead - please trust that!
Over the next few weeks we will be preparing to transition our students to a "two school community." One of the ways we will be doing this is by providing opportunities for all of our students to get to know their teachers and the friends who will be staying with them at St. John or leaving with them to go to Our Lady of Angels. We have several activities planned that will group the students according to their grade level and the school they will be attending next year. If you have not already had a chance to, we encourage you to discuss this change with your children to prepare them for these activities.
Here’s what’s happening
Tuesday, May 29th: Individual School Assemblies followed up with grade level “play dates”! A wonderful opportunity for students to begin to identify with their new school and build relationships with their peers and next year’s teachers!
Friday, June 1st: Fun Day! Students will be grouped according to their grade level and school.
Wednesday, June 6th: Jr Options! Students get another opportunity to work with next year’s teachers!
Thursday, June 14th: Card Making! In the excitement of change and the positivity that we are working towards creating, there is also uncertainty, anxiety, and grief that our students will need to address. A block of time will be set aside on this day for students to make cards, draw pictures, and share with their friends how they might be feeling about being in a different school than some of their friends. Mr. Berg will be available to chat with students while they are doing this activity to encourage conversation and the sharing of our feelings with this big change.
Tuesday, June 19th: Lunch time picnic (weather permitting). Groupings of the same grade and school will be made for a lunch date outside. A nice and relaxed way to chat with next year’s peers and teachers.

Rosary Walk
Wednesday, May 23th the PSC will be leading, "Finding Mary: a rosary walk for families". We would like to invite all families to join us. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate in reciting the rosary as we walk. Don't worry if you don't know the rosary, as we will lead you and it is easy to follow along. We will be going on an outdoor rosary walk with the students and families, rain or shine, to celebrate the month of Mary in May. Please bring your rosaries, and an umbrella in the case of rain. Grades K-2 will be going out at 9:30 - 10:30am (afternoon Kindergarten families are welcome to join us). Grades 3-4 will be going out at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm. We look forward to seeing as many families there as are possible. Meet us in the foyer of the school. If you have any questions, please contact Donamarie Lukie at bookbuggy@me.ca or 780-996-4142.

Club Moo Milk Program Volunteers Needed for next year!
Club Moo is a milk program that encourages children to develop the healthy habit of drinking milk everyday by making it fun and rewarding. Simply offer white and/or chocolate milk three to five times per week at school. Children at participating schools earn cool incentive prizes just by drinking cold fresh milk with their lunch. It’s fun and it’s easy!
This coordinator organizes the milk program and is responsible for preparing notices to families, order forms and milk tickets. He or she follows the “Club Moo” program with Alberta Milk. The coordinator places the milk order and checks it when it arrives. He or she ensures a volunteer schedule is in place for delivery of milk to the students. Also, you get to give out "Club Moo" prizes to the kids... they LOVE that!

Transportation Survey
Alberta Education would like to hear the views of Alberta families on student transportation and the transportation eligibility criteria. To do so, they are conducting an online survey that will close on June 15, 2018. These responses will help the government determine if changes are needed to the student transportation system, and if so, what changes to make.
To share your thoughts and priorities on the student transportation criteria, please fill out the online survey.
