Cougar Cub Nation!

Principal's message
Greetings Cougar Nation!
Thank you for an amazing week filled with student excitement and teacher buzz! We had students out on field trips, and I did receive great feedback on your child's behavior and respect for all adults. They are representing Santa Maria and Tony Gonzalez Elementary very well.
This week in academics, we are preparing to close out the six weeks and looking over grades and attendance before we take our final six week exams for the year! At this time, it is very important that they are present and remain focused. We will be having Summer School beginning on June 5th through June 30th for students that did not meet the necessary criteria for this academic year.
We did celebrate our Kindergarten students with a graduation and 5th graders with a promotion ceremony. I would like to thank teachers, faculty, staff, and parent volunteers for making this a huge success. Thank you parents for coming out and supporting your child's academic advancements.
I want to thank all parents for your support with our children in behavior, academics, and attendance. Please continue your increased involvement in your child’s future.
Warmest regards,
Principal Camacho

Gifted and Talented Program
The last day to turn in parent nomination letters for consideration in the gifted and talented program was on January 26, 2023. Now, a committee will review the parental and teacher nomination and start the identification process for G/T program. A letter will be sent home once the committee has met notifying you and your child of their status in the process.
My child was nominated for the gifted and talented program, now what is the next step?
There is a three step process with gifted and talented program. The next step is the screening process. Now, students will have to take a series of assessments to help determine if they are eligible to be part of the G/T program.
Gifted and Talented traits

Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves a difficulty in learning how to read, write, or spell despite the instruction, the knowledge, and the sociocultural factors. Characteristics of dyslexia are: difficulty reading words in isolation, difficulty in accurately decoding unfamiliar words, difficulty with oral reading, and difficulty spelling words. If you suspect your child may have dyslexia, you can contact your child's teacher or campus councilor.
Special Education Program
The special education program, which serves students with mental, physical, emotional, and behavioral disabilities, is designed to help students reach their academic goals. At TGE, special education teachers work as a team with regular education teachers to ensure that each student enrolled in the program meets state expectations. Students, who meet criteria, will receive accommodations such as in class support, extra time to finish assignments, and many others. The special education program’s goal is to meet the unique needs of a child with disabilities. We currently have three settings which include inclusion, life skills, and resource class. If you suspect that your child may have a disability impeding their learning and may benefit from the special education program, please contact your child’s campus and request information.
