A note from Mrs. Johansen
Our first priority at Sanborn is to create a safe and orderly learning environment for our students and staff. It is with this in mind that I am sending out this important reminder and request for assistance. We hope to create a fun and safe environment for our students that choose to celebrate Halloween on October 31st.
Students are permitted to wear costumes on Halloween as long as their attire complies with the student appearance policy in District 15’s parent/student handbook and the following set of expectations:
Costumes involving fake blood are not allowed.
Actual weapons or look-alikes weapons are not allowed.
Masks that cover the face and head are not allowed.
Costume make-up is allowed provided it does not cover the student’s entire face. Staff members must be able to identify students.
Costumes that could be offensive or perpetuate a stereotype about someone’s culture, gender, heritage or religion are not allowed.
In the past, the "creepy clown" phenomenon has created a degree of anxiety and fear among our students and the larger school community. Consequently, clown-related costumes are prohibited.
Students in 1st-6th grade will have the opportunity to participate in our annual Halloween Parade, which will take place at 1:50 p.m. on Thursday, October 31st. AM Kindergarten students will have a parade at 9:45 a.m. The AM Kindergarten parade will take place inside the building. For the PM parade, we will walk into the neighborhood by way of Wood Street, along Benton Street, and back to school on Slade Street. We will have an indoor parade in the event of rain, but please make sure that students come to school with appropriate cold weather gear, as necessary.
If you do not wish for your child to participate in our Halloween festivities, please notify your child's classroom teacher by Friday, October 25th so that we can make an alternate arrangement for your student.
As a reminder, our Halloween parties will not include food of any kind. Any treats or food-related items that are brought to school will be sent home. To ensure an enjoyable experience at classroom parties given the new policy, our room parents will provide fun activities that do not involve food.
Allergy Task Force information is posted on the District 15 website (https://www.ccsd15.net/Page/7927) if you’d like to review the full policy and associated information.
We appreciate your continued support of Sanborn School. Have a great week!
Fondly,
Erika Johansen
