Teachers College - New York
Having a bad day while traveling reminds one to count their blessings. On Tuesday, I had a rough morning. The bathroom in my hotel flooded while I was in the shower. I will leave out the details, needless to say it was challenging. My eye-glasses and toothbrush were trapped in the bathroom as the water came pouring out of the bathroom and headed towards my belongings. Blind and frantic I picked up my things as water approached. Thankfully, maintenance came to the rescue and cleaned up the room.
Then I was faced with traveling an hour to the elementary school I was assigned to, I was late and it was snowing! I thought... what the heck I am having a bad day.. I'll go shopping no one will miss me. Besides coaching and teaching is hard and I am doing a lousy job!!
After I had my 2 minute pity party.. I realized that our kids, teachers and families have bad days. That the students at PS 116 made it to school that day and they expected me to show up today and try my best! Just like the kids at EV expect me to show up and be my best.
So I got on the subway and made my way across town. I got there late but I got there! I coached and taught in a 4th grade class with kids I had never met, in front of people I didn't know. I was an ok coach and a terrible teacher, but I did it! Next time I will be better!
I learned a lot that day... that I can push myself and do things I am not comfortable doing and its ok. I actually walked away feeling accomplished even though my teaching was a disaster.
The day that I was going to skip was an important day in my learning. I would have missed the information below I am sharing with you, if i hadn't shown up! I also would have missed deepening my understanding of how hard you all work everyday! Thank you for showing up, being uncomfortable (at times) and learning!
Below is some information about literature and promoting books that give our children a mirror to reflect who they are or a window to see others. 9% of the current children's literature is written by people of color. It is an effort to find but one that is worth it!
