November in the SVS Library
Did you know that...
This is the first edition of the Shepaug Valley School Library newsletter for the bibliophiles of Region 12. We hope you enjoy learning about what the SVS Library has to offer and that you find some fun articles along the way. If you like what you see, please leave a comment below. Enjoy and happy reading from the SVS Library team, Carlene, Joan, and Alli!
Graphic Novels Are a Hit at Shepaug!
If you haven't read a comic book since you were a child, you may need a refresher. Today's graphic novels are wonderful visual narratives that capture young readers’ imaginations, and because this format integrates images and text so closely, reading graphic novels builds many of the same visual literacy skills that students need for reading websites and magazines. Often, comics imply rather than tell a story, and readers must use their powers of invention to understand and find meaning. Current graphic novels are trending toward diverse voices and stories, encouraging students to empathize and helping them to find their own place in the world.
The SVS Library has more than 165 graphic novels for students’ reading pleasure. We hope that you will encourage your students to come on by and check one out today! Parents are also welcome to check out our books at any time.
SCIENCE HONORS CHALLENGES GET KIDS READING
Students in grades 9 through 12 are offered honors challenges in their science courses. A central element of each challenge is READING. Students are able to choose a book in their science subject area and to develop a presentation to share with their classmates. Working in collaboration with the science teachers, the SVS Library staff has developed lists of recommendations for each course. We welcome your suggestions for additional titles to challenge our young minds. Please email Joan Temple at templej@region-12.org
Below are just a few of our recommendations.
Darwin's Ghosts: The Secret History of Evolution
Evolution was not discovered single-handedly, Rebecca Stott argues, contrary to what has become standard lore, but is an idea that emerged over many centuries, advanced by daring individuals across the globe who had the imagination to speculate on nature's extraordinary ways, and who had the courage to articulate such speculations at a time when to do so was often considered heresy.
How to Teach Relativity to Your Dog
A lively romp through one of the great theories of modern physics, How to Teach Relativity to Your Dog will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about space, time, and anything else you might have slept through in high school physics class.
This Strange Wilderness: The Life and Art of John James Audubon
In this insightful biography, Plain demonstrates how naturalist and artist John James Audubon's groundbreaking "The Birds of America", published in England in 1827, rocked the art and science worlds through its depictions of birds in naturalistic poses and in their own habitats. ~School Libary Journal
