Science Olympiad
January 12th of this year was the official start for this year's Marine City High School Science Olympiad at the Perry High School Invitational. Marine City sent both it's Varsity and J.V. teams to compete. The Varsity took 2nd place and the J.V team took 11th out of 20 teams. For the next three Saturdays both teams will face off to tough competition at the Stephenson Eastside Invitational, followed by the Plymouth/Canton Invitational, and then finally the Frankenmuth Invitational.
Science Olympiad is an American high school team competition in which students compete in various events pertaining to scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Events fall under three main categories: Science Concepts and Knowledge, Science Processes and Thinking Skills, and Science Application and Technology. They are either knowledge-based (written tests), hands-on (example: chemistry lab practicals), or engineering based (participants construct a device to do specified tasks).
Marine City High School currently has an enrollment of 523 students. This year's team has 20 students who will be making up our Varsity team (13) and a J.V. team (7). Our team began in the 2010-2011 school year. Last year, our 7th year in existence, we qualified for the State competition at Michigan State University for the fifth year in a row!! Schools are not divided based on their sizes, they all compete equally. So a small high school from a rural town competed head to head with some of the largest schools in the state. Coach Paul Dimmer is extremely proud of his amazing academic athletes!

YAC Partnership
A shout out to the Youth Advisory Committee who has awarded MCHS a grant to purchase two charging carts for the building. The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is a group of students representing most high schools in St. Clair County. They are empowered to create a positive role model for youth as philanthropists, assess local youth needs, review grant applications and advise the Community Foundation on youth grant awards.
The Youth Advisory Council Fund was initially created in 1994 with a $1 million dollar challenge grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation through the Michigan Community Foundations Youth Project. The purpose of the Youth Project was to encourage youth development in local communities throughout the state while strengthening community foundation leadership and grant making capacity.
We are fortunate to be able to partner with such a great organization and to have one of our own on this committee, freshman Emma Arnold!
