Education Connection
October 22, 2019
As much as I'd like the fall season to last forever, I would like to take a moment and update you on steps the District has taken toward implementing E-Learning Days when school is canceled due to inclement weather. This is also a reminder to please update your contact information and review our communication procedures for inclement weather days before the snow really begins to fly.
Beginning this year, E-Learning Days may be called for secondary students during an inclement weather day. Elementary students (4K - 6) will have a regular inclement weather day and do not need to take any extra steps on these days. E-Learning Days are innovative instruction days that are supported by the Department of Public Instruction and maintain continuous instruction for students while ensuring the safety of all students and staff.
In Advisory, or other small groups at CFC and PoDS, tomorrow, October 23, all 7-12 students will receive instruction on the expectations and requirements for an E-learning Day. As part of the Professional Development Day activities on Friday, October 25, teachers will be posting a practice assignment in Schoology. While this is an optional assignment for students, their participation will help us to work some of the bugs out before the first E-Learning Day is called.
When/if school is canceled due to inclement weather, the Superintendent will clearly announce that an E-Learning Day will take place for secondary students and staff. This includes students and staff at SPASH, CFC, Ben Franklin, P.J. Jacobs, and PoDs.
On E-Learning Days:
Teachers will post information in a folder called E-Learning Day, located in their Schoology courses no later than 9 a.m. on the E-Learning Day. Students will be expected to go to each of their courses and complete the required activities.
For each course students (7-12) are expected to:
Go into the E-Learning Day folder in a course in Schoology
Read through the learning targets
Complete the required learning activities
Repeat steps 1-3 each of their other courses
Teachers will be available to answer student questions through their school email address during the E-Learning Day. If students are unsure of their teacher’s email, contact information can be found in the E-Learning Day folder in the course’s Schoology page. If your student emails their teacher please be patient with the teacher as they respond.
If your family needs assistance in obtaining reliable internet access for your student, please reach out to the Main Office of your school or call Technology Services (715-345-5511) to ensure we can assist you in bringing the internet to your home prior to an E-Learning Day.
We have prepared a Family Guide to E-Learning Days and encourage you to become familiar with the contents. We know we will likely have a few bumps along the way and want to thank you in advance for your support and patience as we work to find solutions to keep our learning and academic calendar intact during difficult weather years.
If you have questions surrounding E-Learning Days, please contact your building principal, Connie Negaard, Director of Secondary Elementary at cnegaard@pointschools.net or Liz Potter-Nelson, Secondary Education Curriculum Coordinator at epottern@pointschools.net.
Sincerely,
Craig Gerlach, Ed.S.
