Baker Elementary
March 3 2023
A Note from Mrs. Cimek
Hello Baker Families!
I am writing to you from CAMP BAKER! Our halls have completely transformed into a camping scene as we celebrate reading the month of March. You have seen information come home with many ways to engage your child in reading throughout this month. We cannot wait to hear of the fun engaging activities you participate in!
Conferences are next week! We value this time as an opportunity to connect with each of you as we continue rallying around each student. If you know you will not be able to attend the time you signed up for, please let us know as soon as possible. We would love an opportunity to reschedule.
Finally, please consider joining us for our Equipping Parent Workshops outlined below. These are a labor of love that are meant to truly serve our families and community. Feel free to email with any questions.
Welcome to Reading Month!

PE Newsletter
Enrollment is now OPEN for the 2023/2024 school year!
We are welcoming enrollments for all grades, but are especially encouraging families who have children who will be entering either Young Fives or Kindergarten, to complete this important first step!
Go to www.waylandunion.org and find the "Enrollment" button near the top.
If you already have a child who attends a school in the Wayland district, chances are you have a parent portal set up. If so, click on the "Existing Families Enrollment" and follow the prompts to start the Online Registration process (make sure to choose 2023/2024 year). Make sure to hit the “SUBMIT” button when you are done! You will receive an email letting you know whether your enrollment application has been APPROVED or placed on HOLD. If it’s “approved", then you will wait for further instructions from the Baker office in the weeks to come. If it’s placed on “hold” that means that the Administration Building needs additional information or documents from you, in order to process the enrollment. You will need to call the Administration Building (Not Baker) at 269-792-2181 and ask for Dawn Stein who is our district registrar.
If you forgot your login for the portal, please contact helpdesk@waylandunion.org to reset the password.
If this is your first child in Wayland or you’ve never had a portal, click on "New to WUS Enroll” and click through all the screens, answering each question as you go. Make sure to hit the “SUBMIT” button when you are done! After the online portion is done, you will get an email saying your enrollment application is on HOLD. You will need to call the Admin. building at 269-792-2181 to set up an "enrollment meeting" with Dawn Stein, the district registrar. You will need to bring your child’s original birth certificate (a copy will be made at Admin) and 2 proofs of residency. At that time, Dawn will have you sign a concussion awareness form and also a permission slip that allows your child’s school to check his or her immunization status on the Michigan Immunization database. Both of these forms will stay in your child’s school record the entire time he or she attends Wayland schools. She may also have you sign a School of Choice form, if that is required for your child to attend Wayland. When that meeting is done, your application status will be changed to “approved’ and you will wait for further instructions from the Baker office in the weeks to come.
Please email battenfieldk@waylandunion.org with any questions you may have.
Preschool Enrollment for 2023-24
Wayland Union Schools Preschool will begin taking admissions for three and four year old tuition preschool students for the 2023-2024 school year. Enrollment will be on a first come first serve basis beginning February 27, 2023 at 9:00am where a link to a pre-admission form will be placed on the district website. Families of existing preschool students and WUS families and staff will receive this link earlier in February to allow for priority enrollment. Discounted rates are offered for families living in the WUS district thanks to the Gun Lake Casino revenue.
The district will offer both 3 and 4 year old programs at Baker and Dorr Elementary Schools. Students need to turn 3 or 4 by September 1, 2023 and be toilet trained. Both half and extended day options will be available for four year olds and half day options for three year olds.
A new, online admission and billing system called Brightwheel will be implemented to make it easier for parents to register, make monthly payments, and receive communications from teachers.
For more details, please visit our website and find the pre-admission link on the homepage or go to “Departments>Early Childhood>Preschools” to learn more. Questions can be directed to Laurie Zywiczynski, Director of Early Childhood, at lauriez@waylandunion.org.
Hearing/Vision Screening
The ACHD will once again be providing our students with hearing and vision screenings in March. See the letter below for more information. More information will be shared once the date gets closer!

Traversa 360
When looking for bus information please use the Traversa Ride 360 app, NOT the Parent Portal. Parent Portal is correct for all other school information, but Traversa Ride 360 is the only correct information for your bus. To learn more about Traversa see the graphics below!
