Literature Webs

Literature Webs are an advanced organizer that was created by our Literary Reflections Curriculum. The 5 sections on the web require students to think critically of the text in order to successfully complete each section. On the back of the web are specific questions to be asked when completing the web. As we progress through the year, I'm excited to see the depth of responses grow.

The first set of graded Literature Webs are coming home this week. The rubric that was used to grade the webs is attached. These rubrics will be used consistently so students understand what is expected and will know what they need to do when they improve the next time they TRY! There is definitely room for improvement for everybody. We have discussed each section in class and are completing some webs together for continued practice. My goal is to grade one Literature Web every 1-2 weeks so we can track our progress.
Class Blogs

We've been practicing our writing skills as we started our blogs. Check them out! www.kidblog.org/class/mrsuttlescapclass

MATH

Number Talks

This week we participated in a Number Talk with Mrs. Gray, our new math specialist. It was amazing to hear the mat thoughts of all the students. Throughout the year we will do many Number Talks so we can share math strategies with each other. I'm hoping to record some of our talks this year so you can talk about them at home. Check out the video to learn more about Number Talks.

Service Learning Project

October is Bullying Prevention Month

The CAP students are creating campaigns to share with Shields students on how they can help to stop bullying in our school community. We have groups creating iMovies, raps, skits, comics, acrostic poems and more. The goal is to teach people who to be positive so that bullying will become obsolete! The groups will be posting our presentations on our YouTube class page to share. They will also be creating posters to display through the school.

Fish in a Tree

We are participating in Global Read Aloud, which kicked off Monday. PTO was amazing and bought each CAP student their own copy of the book, "Fish in a Tree" and we will be reading this book together with other students around the globe. We will be connecting with other classes through Skype, Twitter, Blogs, and WriteAbout.com. As we read this book we will still be participating in Socratic Seminars, but will also be learning about signposts. Stay tuned to find out what those are!! Feel free to buy your own copy of the book and read along with us!
