Jaguar News
Volume 2, Issue 9 - October 12, 2018
Dear Families,
This week is one of celebration both for Gentry and Columbia Public Schools. In our building, we are keeping ourselves busy finishing up Science Camp with all our 6th grade students, we are hosting Jaguar Rumble today, and CPS broke ground for the new middle school.
If you missed the news, yesterday was the groundbreaking ceremony for the new middle school that is scheduled to open in 2020. This event is important to us because the new school will help relieve the overcrowding at Gentry. At this time the school doesn't have a name or a boundary, those things will come later in the year. We will keep you updated as we get more information!
Jaguar Rumble Against Cancer-TODAY!
Our student-driven fundraiser, Jaguar Rumble Against Cancer, will begin this afternoon (Friday, October 12th) at 2:45! Our fall Football, Cross Country, Cheerleaders and Volleyball athletes will be having a "friendly" competition on the volleyball court. The game will begin at 2:45 pm and will end at approximately 4 pm with one team claiming victory! Please note that we do not have access to after school activity buses on Fridays. All students will be responsible for securing their own transportation home at the conclusion of this game.
Event t-shirts were sold Oct. 9th – Oct. 11th. Be sure to have your student wear their t-shirt to the game today as this will be their entry fee into the game. Admission at the door for those who did not purchase a t-shirt will be $5. Hope to see you there to support a great cause! Go Jaguars!

8th Grade Science Field Trip
Next week our eighth grade students will be headed to Rock Bridge State Park! The class will be divided into two groups with our first 8th grade group attending on Thursday, October 18th and our second 8th grade group attending on Friday, October 19th. The purpose of this all day field trip is to provide our students with a place-based educational experience. Each student will rotate through five stations which include: hiking, cave exploration, water quality testing, tree coring and stream ecology station. Students will be notified by their teachers as to what day they will be attending.
Fall Athletics Uniform/Equipment Turn-In
If your student participated on any of our fall (Football, Volleyball, Spirit Squad or Cross Country) athletic teams, now is the time to have them return their equipment and/or team uniform. Please be sure that their uniform is clean and returned in a plastic bag with your student's name clearly printed on the bag. Your student can return this to their coach before/after school or they may return their uniform to the main office, with the exception of football players who will be required to turn their equipment in directly to their coach. Thanks all!
Spanish Class T-shirts
The Spanish program at Gentry Middle School will be selling t-shirts this year to all faculty and students.
The cost of the t-shirts will be $11.00 for sizes small to X-large and $13.00 for size 2X. All the money collected will be used for the Spanish Program. Checks should be made payable to: Gentry Middle School
Please contact Mrs. Elkin (LElkin@cpsk12.org) or Mrs. Faith (DFaith@cpsk12.org) if would like to order a t-shirt.
Student Flu Shot Clinic
** Note: This "Influenza (Flu) Vaccine School-Based Clinic Consent Form" was included in the packet of paperwork that was provided to parents during our Schedule Pick-Up Night in August. If you completed and returned this form to our school nurse during Schedule Pick-Up, then there is no need for further action on your part.
** If, however, you completed the consent form in August, but your student has recently received the Flu Vaccine elsewhere, please be sure to call the main office at 214-3240 and ask to speak with the nurse so that we can remove your child from our immunization list.

Links to Learning Grant
Her grant provides high quality books for all sixth grade readers. All three sixth grade ELA teachers will receive copies of each Mark Twain Award Nominee Book and each Truman Nominee Award Book. Having these books in our classrooms allows more students to read them and recommend them to others. Thanks, Assistance League!
We've Got Spirit! How 'bout You?
If your 7th/8th grade student is interested trying out for our Winter Gentry Cheer Squad, now is the time to make sure that all of their MSHSAA paperwork is completed and on file in the main office. Our cheer squad tryouts will be held on October 17th-19th in the upstairs commons. Students must attend all three days of tryouts in order to be considered for a spot on the team.
