A Message from the Principal...
Dear friends,
Happy Monday! It looks like we are in for some cooler weather this week and with that, I hope we see a greater sense of calm in our students. I don't know what it was, but it seems like with the warmer weather last week, many of our kids got an early case of Spring Fever. They certainly appeared to be more active during break and lunch, and we also saw an "uptick" in kids being sent to the office for behavior issues. When we return from break we will be visiting 8th Grade Ram classes to give them our year-end pep talk, and we may need to look into expanding that school-wide. Minimally, you can expect a TPMStv reminder. Meanwhile, we appreciate you revisiting school-wide behavioral expectations with your students.
Thanks for all you do to support the Ram Way and a positive school climate.
Sincerely,

GENERAL INFORMATION & RESOURCES
Child Hunger Prevention and Fair Treatment Act of 2017
On September 12, 2017, Governor Jerry Brown signed into law Senate Bill 250 (Hertzberg), the Child Hunger Prevention and Fair Treatment Act of 2017 (Chapter 726, Statutes of 2017), also known as the No Shaming Act. You can view this law on the California Legislative Information Web here.
The law requires local educational agencies (LEA)—specifically public school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools—that provide school meals through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) or the School Breakfast Program (SBP) to ensure the parent or guardian of a pupil who has unpaid school meal fees is not shamed, treated differently, or served a meal that differs from what a pupil whose parent or guardian does not have unpaid school meal fees would receive under that LEA’s policy.
Federal Guidance Regarding Unpaid Meal Charges
The law refers to an LEA’s meal charge policy pursuant to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Policy Memorandum SP-46: Unpaid Meal Charges: Local Meal Charge Policies, released by the USDA on July 8, 2016. You can view this policy memo on the USDA School Meals Policy Web page at here.
This memo states that all school food authorities operating the NSLP or SBP must have a written and clearly communicated meal charge policy in place to ensure consistency and transparency by July 1, 2017. The LEA should communicate their board-approved policy to school administrators, school food service professionals, families, and students.
The USDA offers resources on the Food and Nutrition Service, School Meals: Unpaid Meal Charges Web page at here.
On this Web page is a link to the Overcoming the Unpaid Meal Challenge: Proven Strategies from Our Nation’s Schools handbook (September 16, 2016). Especially helpful in the handbook is Appendix B: Local Meal Charge Policy Checklists (located on pages 49–55).
The management bulletin regarding SB 250 can be found on the California Department of Education Management Bulletin Web page here.
