DO YOUR BEST ON THE TEST!
Preparing for the ISTEP+ for Grades 3, 4 & 5 & for the IREAD for Grade 3.
WHAT PARENTS CAN DO TO HELP THEIR CHILD BE SUCCESSFUL ON THE TEST
Elementary schools across the state of Indiana will soon begin ISTEP+ testing. The state determines the mandatory testing window for all schools. This year, March 2-11 is for Applied Skills (writing, problem solving) and April 27-May 15 will be the time frame for new, technology “enhanced” testing items.
Grade 3 students will also be taking the IREAD test on Tuesday, March 10.
This year’s revised ISTEP+ test promises to be a real challenge for all students. In addition to revised questions presented in a format different than what students have been used to, the technology-enhanced test will be taken entirely via computer through the state’s online testing portal. Parents are encouraged to visit the following websites to learn more about the test. There is also a website you can have your child visit to work on some practice tests.
Practice Tests – http://experience-ccra-in.ctb.com/
At the Indiana Department of Education’s website you can find information about the test and some sample questions that you can practice with your child. At http://www.doe.in.gov/ go to the Parent Portal on the top bar. Then click into IREAD or ISTEP+.
Students take the Acuity test three times this year. This test helps to target what they know and identifies skills they need additional help in mastering. Logging onto this site will allow your student to practice based on his/her individual needs:

Students may long onto this site to read stories and practice skills assigned in reading each week: http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/connected/login.do
Below are some other sites your family may find helpful. (Students should already know their passwords.)

MES STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NATIONAL "GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE"
Sponsored by MES Caring Character Club
Milan Elementary’s Caring Character Club is a fourth grade group sponsored by School Counselor Brenda Schwering. Its purpose is to help promote the development, in all MES students, of the desirable character traits in our TeRRiFiC'C Character program.
During the week of January 26-30, they have planned for our school to participate in a national initiative called "The Great Kindness Challenge" which is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible using a national checklist of 50 kind acts as a guideline. Watch for the list to come home soon along with a letter explaining the program and encouraging the kids to participate. Although our goal is for the children to complete as many items on the checklist as they can, they will not be asked to return the form.
Members of the group will be giving kindness tips during daily morning announcements and Mrs. Schwering is doing a "Lunch and Learn" on Friday, January 23rd to explain the program to the students. There will also be an opportunity during lunch recess on Wednesday, January 28th for any student who wants to complete some of the challenges.
Watch for information on this program to come home soon with your child!
