Weekly Communication

May 25, 2023
Dear PV Families,
The Memorial Day weekend is upon us which indicates the school year is winding down. I hope you and your children have had a positive and rewarding year. Thankfully, we were able to get back to something closer to that normal we know, which has been a relief.
As we prepare to close out this current school year, we are already thinking about the upcoming one. Next year, we will begin the 2023-24 school year with school police officers in our schools. You may recall that earlier this spring, our Board of School Directors approved seven officers, one per school, to be employed for the 2023-24 school year. This is a big step for the district. The Board, Policy Committee, Safety and Operations ad hoc Committee, and various member of the community have worked diligently to develop policy language, administrative regulations, and procedures to guide the work of these individuals. The goal is to identify the "just right" police to serve in our schools and, once hired, to support their understanding of our students and school communities. Administration looks forward to these individuals enhancing safety and security and becoming valued members of our schools and community at large.
We would like to know your thoughts on school police officers and have developed a survey for parents and students (grades 5-11). We are also planning to administer a survey to our staff. I am linking the PARENT SURVEY HERE and hope you are able to complete it prior to the end of the school year, June 9. You can complete one survey per child if you desire, but please do not feel obligated to do so. This is your choice.
A copy of the STUDENT SURVEY is linked here for your review. You may opt your child out of the survey per policy. Elementary and middle level students can be opted out by contacting their classroom/homeroom teacher. High school students can be opted out by contacting their House Principal. The goal is to administer the survey to our students (during school) in grades 5-11 beginning next Thursday, June 1, via email. We are hoping to collect results from parents, students, and staff by the last day of school, June 9.
Moving forward, we plan to annually survey our stakeholder groups to learn their views of, and experiences with, school police. We will rely on the data to identify strengths and needs as well as any necessary action steps. I hope that you will take a few minutes to share your views on school police officers.
Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.
Sincerely,
Dr. Barbara A. Russell
