Te toi whakairo, ka ihiihi, ka wehiwehi, ka aweawe te ao katoa.
“Artistic excellence makes the world sit up in wonder.”
Moemoea/Aspiration:
Through dance, drama, music and visual art Puketapu School will make the world sit up in wonder.
Our Why?:
Arts education explores, challenges, affirms, and celebrates unique artistic expressions of self, community, and culture. It embraces toi Māori, valuing the forms and practices of customary and contemporary Māori performing, musical, and visual arts.
Learning in, through, and about the arts stimulates creative action and response by engaging and connecting thinking, imagination, senses, and feelings. By participating in the arts, students’ personal well-being is enhanced. As students express and interpret ideas within creative, aesthetic, and technological frameworks, their confidence to take risks is increased. Specialist studies enable students to contribute their vision, abilities, and energies to arts initiatives and creative industries.
In the arts, students learn to work both independently and collaboratively to construct meanings, produce works, and respond to and value others’ contributions. They learn to use imagination to engage with unexpected outcomes and to explore multiple solutions.
Arts education values young children’s experiences and builds on these with increasing sophistication and complexity as their knowledge and skills develop. Through the use of creative and intuitive thought and action, learners in the arts are able to view their world from new perspectives. Through the development of arts literacies, students, as creators, presenters, viewers, and listeners, are able to participate in, interpret, value, and enjoy the arts throughout their lives.
We will be looking forward to presenting our learning and creativity to everyone at our SOMAD Community Concert at the end of term
School Donations... In or Out?
Our Board of Trustees needs to decide whether we should opt-in or not to the Government’s new school donations scheme.
If the board agrees to opt in to the scheme AND to not ask you for any donations (gifts/koha), except for overnight camps or sports teams, the Government will pay our school $150 per student per year.
We will be deciding whether to opt in or out at our Board meeting tonight. If you would like to come along to join the discussion, come along to school at 7.00pm

Kia Manawanui at the SPCA
Recently we have had two separate groups of akonga showing their kindness to the SPCA.
Harper and Aidan arranged the animal dress up day at the end of last term, and Kyla, Olly, Bailey and Anton arranged a sherbet and brownie stand last week for Black Cat Day.
Between them, they raised almost $200 for the SPCA! On Friday, a small group took the money they had raised to the SPCA.

Totara Shared Kai
The Tech Hub
Kia Ora everyone,
I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend. We had a great week last week trying out some of our Rube Goldburg style machines to pop a balloon. It takes lots of trial and error when designing these machines, which I know some of the students find hard! One of the groups I worked with tried 20 times to get 1 small section of their machine to work! The girls have made it into a great video clip, showing all the attempts, but here is the final one.
Totara Outdoor Learning Space
We were super lucky due to the generosity of the 2 nurseries that Mrs Harvey visited.
We bought and were donated a variety of plants especially for our Lizard Garden from Bill Clarkson who runs a nursery from his home. Bill used to be a teacher and started the native propagating programme at Moturoa school. Thank you Bill.
I can't thank either of these nurseries enough for their knowledge and generosity.
