School Updates
Mission Avenue Elementary STEM:
Mission Avenue has been "Launching into the New Year" with lessons on force and motion in the STEM lab. Students are building small catapults and designing balloon race cars. The school Monthly STEM Challenge for families and classes is designing and building catapults using the Design Process. Teachers have been working on professional development centered on Gold Standard PBL projects and the teacher focus on PBL is at an all time high!
Mission is hosting weekly school tours, Fridays at 8:30 in January so prospective families can see what Mission has to offer for 2022-23. Come visit and see all of the exciting things going on at the school. Contact Sarah Matosian, Magnet Coordinator for more information.(sarah.matosian@aps.edu).
Garfield Middle School STEM Magnet:
The students at Garfield have been busy. The Language Arts students in Mrs. Clayton's classes designed board games based on literature. The students designed and printed their game pieces on the 3D printers in the STEM Den! The students are working with dissolvable supports and it has been a game changer in the quality of their pieces! Leadership students have begun using the green screens and Garfield has gone high tech and students will be live streaming the school athletics events!
Valley High School:
Valley computer science students had a great virtual event with Technolochicas in December. Students worked with mentors to complete challenges coding with Python and two students won XBox 360's! It was an amazing opportunity!
The Vikings will be hosting three Stem Challenges this Spring. The first is a paper coaster challenge that will be held on February 8th! We are excited to see what the students design!
