Football Falls to Hoover in State Quarterfinals
The Hewitt-Trussville football team finished the 2017 season 11-1 as they fell to Hoover 56-21 in the Class 7A state quarterfinal that was held Friday at Hewitt-Trussville Stadium. The Huskies have now amassed a 22-2 record over the last two years along with two straight region titles.
The Huskies got off to a slow start against the Bucs. The offense went three-and-out and Hewitt was forced to punt. The Bucs scored on their first play as Jalen Parker found Shedrick Jackson for a 49-yard touchdown pass. The extra point failed and the Bucs led 6-0. The Huskies moved all the way to the Hoover 10-yard line on their next possession but turned the ball over on downs. On the ensuing Hoover drive, Parker hit George Pickens for a 23-yard score. Hoover continued to add to the lead as they scored on their next drive as well. The Bucs were up 20-0 with over ten minutes left in the second quarter.
The Huskies battled back with a great drive of their own. Paul Tyson hit Elliott McElwain for a 34-yard gain on a screen pass. The two would hook up again and McElwain got down to the two yard line. Tyson then found Logan Pitts in the end zone for a touchdown to cut the lead to 20-7. The Huskies got the ball again just before halftime. On the final play of the half, Tyson threw a slant to Dazalin Worsham and the sophomore receiver scampered 72 yards for a touchdown as time expired. The score was 20-14 and Hewitt had the momentum.
Hoover got the ball first in the third quarter and faced a 4th and 4 in Husky territory. The Bucs picked up the first down and scored two plays later to take a 27-14 lead. That would be the beginning of a quarter dominated by Hoover. Tyson would find Pitts for a 13-yard score later in the game for the Huskies final touchdown.
The game was the final contest for 21 Hewitt-Trussville seniors. Head Coach Josh Floyd said, “I’m super proud of my team. They’ve done some great things. This senior class has left a legacy for this program. I’m going to miss those guys. They’ve worked hard, been successful, and left their mark on this program. I’m going to miss those seniors.”
