Spring Sports!

Dear Atholton Families,

Although there is no snow in the forecast, the unpredictable temperatures of the last week make it difficult to make the transition to Spring sports. Nevertheless, it is exciting to have our campus full of spring athletes (softball, baseball, tennis, track, and lacrosse). I even had the pleasure of spending some time on the tennis court hitting with our tennis team! I look forward to seeing many of you at the games this season.

I am excited to announce that the next Pizza with Principal will take place on Thursday, April 4 @ 6:30pm. At this meeting we will engage in a conversation about values. That is to say, what values define us, unite us, and make us uniquely Atholton? I encourage you to come and participate in the discussion. Your contribution to the development of our school values in integral to defining our school community. I hope to see you there – mark your calendars.

It is hard to believe that graduation is just around the corner! Stay tuned for the release of those dates! With graduation comes SENIOR WEEK. I would strongly encourage parents and their seniors to attend the HC Drugfree Senior Week program at Marriott’s Ridge HS on Monday, April 1 at 7pm. This presentation not only will touch on issues surrounding alcohol but the Ocean City Police and Beach Patrol will also address the following topics:

  • Water safety: how to handle rip currents, diving into shallow water, etc.
  • Beach safety: keep from getting buried in sand, playing ball, etc.
  • Parental liability for students under 18
  • Conversations to have with your senior before beach week
  • Crossing Coastal Highway and legal issues
  • Lease agreements and how to protect yourself
  • Fines (fake IDs, noise, sleeping in vehicles, etc.)
  • Realities of incarceration from an inside view

Finally, last week I had the privilege of visiting Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress to discuss education funding and advocate on behalf of principals across the nation. My experience as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Secondary School Principals has afforded me several opportunities to represent the voice of principals in Washington and beyond. . My role in this organization on the Board of Directors has been integral in advocating for and supporting educational issues important to both administrators and teachers. My tenure on this Board has led to me to believe that there is much work to be done in advocating for the needs of all stakeholders (students, teachers, and administrators). As such, it is with the support of Dr. Martirano that I am officially announcing my intent to run for President of the National Association of Secondary School Principals! I am so honored to be in the position to be able to lead this national organization. However, my ability to do so cannot and should not occur without the support and backing of my Atholton family. If elected, my tenure would begin July, 2020 and conclude June 30, 2021. I am really excited about this opportunity for our school and school district. I will keep you all posted as this process unfolds. Results will be announced this summer.

Have a fantastic week!

Warmly,

Robert A. Motley

Although I am not a dancer, I will do my best to represent Atholton well. It should definitely be worth the price of admission.
