Red Ribbon Week
Fairfield Elementary will celebrate National Red Ribbon Week the week of October 22nd-26th. The Red Ribbon Campaign is a nationwide program first established in California in 1985 to honor Enrique Camarena, a DEA agent who lost his life in the fight against drugs. The Red Ribbon campaign strives to build awareness about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. October is also Bullying Prevention Month, so we will have combined campaigns and create both anti-drug and anti-bullying themes to help build awareness for both of these causes. Each day we will focus on a different activity and theme to reinforce the message of “Just Say No” to bullying and drugs.
Monday, Oct. 22nd: Dreaming of NO Drugs or Bullying!
*Everyone wear pajamas to start off Red Ribbon Week!
Tuesday, Oct. 23rd: Picture it—a school with NO drugs or bullies!
*Today is PICTURE DAY! Respect yourself and others by dressing your best!
Wednesday, Oct. 24th: CRAZY about KINDNESS!
*Wear clothes that do not match or rock a crazy hair do!
Thursday, Oct. 25th: TEAM UP against drugs and bullying!
*Wear your favorite sports gear to show how we are teaming up with Kindness and Health!
Friday, Oct. 26th: Show us your spirit and SOCK-it to Drugs and Bullying!
*It is your last day to show how committed you are to a drug and bully-free life! Show your Falcon spirit by wearing your grade level color or Falcon Spirit Wear and support SOCKTOBER by wearing crazy socks!
Please encourage your child to participate each day in celebrating this event along with millions of other students across America. We hope this week will serve to open doors of communications among students, teachers, and parents that will create an environment promoting health, safety, and the wellbeing of our children. Let’s do our best in helping our children to be drug and bully-free!
Thank you for your participation and support.
SOCKTOBER FUNDRAISER
October is now SOCKTOBER!
Every night in the United States an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. This October, Fairfield SCA is joining the Socktober movement with our annual sock drive to prove that even the smallest acts of love, like donating a pair of socks can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless.

National School Lunch Week
National School Lunch Week (NSLW) has been celebrated for more than 50 years! It is a weeklong celebration filled with events and activities designed to promote the benefits of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). Go to www.schoollunch.org/nslw to find information on the history of NSLW, school lunch facts, infographics, activity sheets and more.
To celebrate the healthy lunch choices in Virginia Beach City Public Schools, our schools will promote National School Lunch Week: October 15-19, 2018. This year’s theme “School Lunch: lots 2 love” is tailor-made to help cafeteria employees tell their school lunch story and highlight what makes their cafeteria such a special for students to visit every day.
The NSLP was signed into law in 1946 (Richard B. Russell Act), and is the largest of the federal child nutrition programs. This program provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students. More than 30 million students are served healthy lunches every school day. The program requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards by:
- Ensuring students are offered both fruits and vegetables every day of the week;
- Substantially increasing offerings of whole grain-rich foods;
- Offering only fat-free or low-fat milk varieties;
- Limiting calories based on the age of children being served; and
- Reducing amounts of saturated fat, Trans fats and sodium.
Student and parent participation is essential for the success of any school lunch program. Therefore, it is our desire that your children will choose to eat school lunches – not just during this special week of observance, but every day. Not only will the lunch program assist them with fulfilling a nutritional need; it may also offer you the luxury of a little more time by not having to prepare their lunch.
Join us in celebrating NSLW by having lunch with your child! Adult menu items are priced a la carte

Watch D.O.G.S. Program
Watch D.O.G.S. Program
The PTA will be launching the Watch D.O.G.S.
(Dads of Great Students) program in January.
What are the goals of a Watch D.O.G.S. program?
1. To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
2. To provide extra sets of eyes and ear to enhance school security and reduce bullying.
Who are Watch D.O.G.S and how does Watch D.O.G.S. work?
Watch D.O.G.S. are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures who volunteer for at least one day each year at an official Watch D.O.G.s. school.
What do Watch D.O.G.S. do (while they at school)?
During the day, Watch D.O.G.S. may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, patrol the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well.
