Thoughts for the week to extend our training from Wednesday's Faculty Meeting

“In a cartoon by the Far Side cartoonist Gary Larson, a bug-eyed school kid asks his teacher, ‘Mr. Osborne, can I be excused? My brain is full!’ If you’re just engaging in mechanical repetition, it’s true, you quickly hit the limit of what you can keep in mind. However, if you practice elaboration, there’s no known limit to how much you can learn. Elaboration is the process of giving new material meaning by expressing it in your own words and connecting it with what you already know. The more you can explain about the way your new learning relates to your prior knowledge, the stronger your grasp of the new learning will be, and the more connections you create that will help you remember it later.”

— Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger and Mark A. McDaniel from Make It Stick

Let's get our students ELABORATING through student to student discourse and in their writing.

2015 - 2016 Observations

The focus of the yearly observations this year will be on literacy instruction. Staci and I will be providing you with feedback on your overall literacy instruction, including but not limited to, whole class mini-lesson and follow-up activity, small group instruction, reading centers/workstations and overall literacy environment. Thirty minutes will be focused on whole class reading lesson w/follow-up activity & overall literacy environment. The other 30 minutes will be on your small group instruction and reading center/work stations. This is what you do day in and day out, so it should be a very natural observation. Please know that we know and expect that we will not see everything on the observation sheet (copy attached), as we will only be in your classroom for a portion of your literacy instruction. The observation form is formulated around the Learning Model, the Student Learning Behaviors that we've been working on, the DRA rubric & Continuum of Learning focus areas, professional development we've had on student collaboration and discourse and best practices. Be watching for sign-ups for approx. 1 hour (or two 30 minute) time slot. We understand that your schedule may not allow for our observation to be a continuous observation to see the areas specified above, so let us know what works for you.

For those of you in 3rd, 4th and 5th that teach Math, we will be looking for the same things but related to Math with overall connections to reading for meaning and learning. For those of you in Special Education and support positions, we will be using and focusing on your literacy instruction as well. Specials teachers our focus will be on the Learning Model, the Student Learning Behaviors that we've been working on, professional development we've had on student collaboration and discourse and best practices within your content area.
