April 2019 - Bernal Intermediate

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the month of April. Spring has arrived and the flowers are beginning to bloom. In April, our students will begin taking their State Assessments in English Language Arts, Math and Science (8th grade). Please speak with your student about how they are preparing for success on the tests within their classes. Also, remember that school attendance, although always important, is exceptionally important during state testing time. Please plan trips, Dr.’s appointments and other matters around the school day over the next month or so. Please also ensure that your students are getting plenty of sleep and eating a healthy breakfast before school each day. Please see Bernal's testing calendar linked here.

Grading term: a reminder that the end of the grading term is April 19. Please have your student (and you should be checking also) check their grades in School Loop regularly. Email your student’s teachers if you have a question about a particular grade or assignment. If that proves unsuccessful and you haven’t resolved your question, you can contact your student’s academic counselor (also through School Loop). Finally, if you still feel you have not resolved the matter, you can contact my office and I would be happy to help.

That’s all for this month. As always, take care of yourselves and each other.

Attention 8th Grade Parents!

End of the year expectation letter for 8th grade parents/students

Hello, 8th-Grade Parents:

On Friday, March 22nd I sent out the end-of-the-year expectation letter to all 8th-grade students. In anticipation of our upcoming 8th-grade privileges and promotion ceremony, this letter is to inform parents and students of the school expectations regarding participation in the end-of-the-year activities. 8th-grade promotion is based upon academic requirements and positive student behavior. Please review the letter below with your student.

The Eraser Challenge - Be Aware

Students at Bernal Intermediate are not using pencils solely for taking notes. Some students are rubbing their arms with pencil erasers until their skin is scarred. I also found out that kids were sharing erasers to complete the challenge. The Eraser Challenge is a dare game that involves rubbing a rubber eraser against one’s skin while reciting the English alphabet. I want all parents to be aware of skin scars and/or abrasions on their child’s arms and hands. Infection and/or long term scarring may occur if a student continues to play this game.
